S1000D Publish IETP not available

I am attempting to build an IETP from the sample S1000D bike data provided with TCS 4.  I have opened the S1000D bike sample Publication Module (PM) in Framemaker 11.  I followed  the help file instructions but have encountered a couple of issues.  First, when I attempted to set global applicability for the book, there are no applicability values available (see help file instructions below).

To implement applicability (Global) at a book level,

  1. When the book file is in focus, select S1000D > Common Source Data.The S1000D Common Source Data dialog appears.
  2. In the Common Source Data dialog, select the Applicability tab and then PCT.
  3. In the list of products, select the applicable product and click Apply.

I am beginning to think that the Book/PM is not properly set up with applicability values.

Second, the "Publish IETP" menu item is grayed out and not available.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Uninstall FrameMaker 11 and reinstall on a second PC

I've a licenced copy of FrameMaker 11 which I've legally installed on two virtual PCs (both on Macs running Windows XP in VMWare Fusion).

On this older Mac, I've also got a full licence for FrameMaker 9 which I will need to uninstall.

I now want to remove this licence from an old Mac and put it on a new PC running Windows 7 (a proper PC not a Mac).  I also want this to be registered at Adobe HQ, so that I don't get an in-your-face message saying this licence has been used to the max.

As usual with the internet, even being very precise with the question, I get replies from window cleaners, market gardners and hang glider salesmen, among another 50,000+ useless comments.

I'm guessing, with a PC's uninstall program this should be easy; but the important thing is to notify Adobe that the uninstall has taken place.

I could also just go ahead and delete the virtual PC I have on my old Mac, but I'm fairly certain this won't register with  Adobe.

I can't get a sensible answer to this problem, so would really appreciate it if anyone else has a worthwhile remedy.

column width from xml attribute to framemaker table

$

I'm trying to set the column widths of a table in framemaker by importing the width from an attribute in the imported xml file. But it doesn't work...

This is from my read/write rules:

element "ITEM-CELL-LIST"

{

is fm table cell element;

attribute "width" is fm property column width;

fm property column width value is "2cm";

}

The last line that specifies the width to 2cm seems to be accepted as I can save the EDD as DTD without errors, but it has no effect on the actual widths of the table created.

The line above it doesn't work at all. When I try to save the EDD, I get the following error: "Invalid property specified for the element (ITEM-CELL-LIST)."

I've tried every way I can think of, but nothing seems to work

The only way I've been able to actually set the widths is by creating a table in the master template page and resizing the columns. That carries over to the imported xml.

Export paragraph format tag to attribute

Hi All,

Using structured FM 11 on Windows 7.

I need a way to round-trip paragraph format tags. I know it is easy to assign them on import with the EDD, but I'm not sure how to save them on export.

I was hoping the read/write rules could contain something along the lines of:

attribute "paraFormat" is fm property paragraph format tag;

I figure it can probably be done with ExtendScript or a custom API, but I would rather avoid these if possible.

Thanks!
Trevor

dynamically read topics

Hi,

I'm very new to DITA, I understand XML but am looking to create more documents using it and DITA/Framemaker seems the way to go.

Is it possible to create a document that looks through all of the topics in a folder then creates a new topic from those (essentially a summary), pulling out certain elements?

I'm looking at a timesaving mechanism, so that I can have lots of folders with subjects in each (ie - several topics) then be able to quickly create either summary sheets or note sheets from that content

Many thanks

John.

Trouble with Cross-References

FM11 / DITA 1.2

What could cause a particular cross reference to consistently NOT work? I know that's vague. I'll try to give a more specific example:

Let's say I have a collection of xrefs across several XML files in a DITA map. Some xrefs might even point to the same item (usually a <title> tag with an ID attribute). On output to a book with FM components, particular xrefs just will not work (they output as "unresolved"). I can fix it manually in the FM file, but I'd rather it work correctly in the first place, especially since I deal with translation in to several languages, and if I can't get an xref to just work, I have to fix it many, many times.

I've tried deleting the xref and starting again; I've tried changing the ID attribute in case there was some kind of conflict...I still have trouble with that particular xref (and this happens with more than one xref). What else can I try?

Again, I know this is vague. I'd be happy to elaborate on relevant points. I just don't currently have time to write a massive description and I want to get this question out.

Thanks in advance.

FM8 and DITA -- Correct way to insert non-breaking spaces, etc.?

$

I've gone round in circle trying to figure this out.

FrameMaker's "good old" method of inserting a non-breaking space -- CTRL+SPACE -- doesn't work if the content is output as a DITA XML file: XML requires a string consisting of Ampersand-"nbsp"-semicolon (I can't enter the actual token because browsers evidently see it as a "real" non-breaking space...)

What's the trick for entering non-breaking spaces in content that will be saved asboth:

  • DITA / XML

  • FrameMaker binary (.fm)

Is this one of those ALT+keypad things? Or...?

Cheers & thanks,
Riley

I installed Acrobat Pro 8 and now I can no longer create pdfs from Frame 7. I get the following message:

Is there a way to fix this w/out having to reinstall Frame?

How to handle non-breaking hyphens on translation to XML

$

Hi,

I have a document that uses non-breaking hyphens in some places and hyphens in others. I think they were trying to stop line wraps from happening in certain cases.

Anyway, now I need to save these files as XML. I believe I need a 'reader character map is 0x2D = 0x??;' statement in my ReadWrite Rules.

Problem is I don't know what ESC - h equates to in hex so I can fill in 0x??

Anyone know the hex value for the non-breaking hyphens?

Thanks,

After experiencing problems working with Structured FM via a VPN connection, we are contemplating alternative software solutions.  Is it possible to convert existing Structured FM docs into unstructured FrameMaker?  Or does anyone have a sugggestion for another Adobe software that can handle  20-100 pp. Operations & Maintenance manuals and diagnostic guides, with a large number of .wmf inmages.  We are currently required to generate. the documents in .pdf format.  Suggestions would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

FM9: Import of previously created xml file back to FrameMaker

$

Hi all,

I have saved a FrameMaker document as an XML file and would like to import it back to FrameMaker. I am guessing it needs a little more skills and attention than just hitting "Open file" cause previous attempts to convert that xml file back to how it used to look in FrameMaker  obviously failed.

I am importing it back to the same system so the styles and everything are exactly the same.

The idea behind this is that my boss wishes to check in the manual with every software release so a specific version of the manual for a specific release can be recreated at any time. Just that I have no idea how that will work if I cant import it back into FrameMaker to convert it into the manual I'd need. I am not familiar with the structured operation and I am desperately hoping theres a solution I can work with.

Thank you!!!

How do I roll back from FM12.0.2 to earlier state?

What happened to Full FM?

Yesterday, I downloaded FM v12 Trial, upgraded to full version with license/serial number, and used it with some existing .fm files for initial testing.

Today, using same icon on Start Menu and/or Desktop, I only have XML Author.

Will FMv9 work after installing FMv12?

$

Running Win7/64-bit. Have been running FMv7 and FMv9 for some time now.

Recently, I installed v12 and had tinkered with it for a few days before getting around to opening v9 - at which time I've discovered v9 will not start. With splash screen up, only Localization starts, and then "Internal Error 9004, 6921628, 9677518, 0. FrameMaker detected a serious problem and must quit."

I cannot know if v12 installation affected v9, since I had used my pc, worked business as usual, etc. for days before getting around to going into v9.

I am also tinkering with third part add-ons, so I might back track and find this myself. All I am really asking for at this point is for confirmation that v9 and v12 will can be expected to play nice together?

Thanks,

Dave

Need help with ditaval

$

I've created a very simple ditaval file to filter by attribute, but it's not working. I've probably made a basic mistake. Here's what I've done:

  1. Created a simple DITA topic (two paragraphs).
  2. Set the "audience" attribute on both paragraphs. The first is set to "beginner" and the second is set to "advanced," as shown below:

    <title>My Topic</title>
    <body>
      <p audience = "beginner">First paragraph. </p>
      <p audience = "advanced">Second paragraph.</p>
    </body>
    </topic>
  3. Created a simple ditaval file:

    <val>
      <prop att="audience" val="beginner" action="exclude" />
      <prop att="audience" val="advanced" action="include" />
    </val>

  4. Created a ditamap and added the topic to it.
  5. Saved the ditamap as a composite document and checked the

Quick way to validate DITA specializations

$

Hi guys,

is there any way to quickly validate a DITA specialization against standard DITA resulting in a list of what had been specialized?

I'm necromancing a long dead legacy document here, that had been written in some DITA specialization.

Problem is, nobody remembers about there wheres' and whats' of the document (my boss even barely remembered that there had been "something").

For now I managed to save it as XML, but the error logs went crazy while doing so

The only person who might have had an idea about the case left the company years ago, too.

The issue at hand is, that the document needs to be imported into some CMS with DITA import filters - and I need to know at least where problems may occur.

As I have literally no time and budget for this, I need some quick and dirty solution

Maybe you guys have some bright idea.

FMv7, Open With/File Association

$

Installed FMv9 after installing FMv7.

On file server, v7 files now show v9 Icon.

When doubleclicking v7 files, they open in v9.

When right clicking v7 file, to Open With, v7 is not listed as an option. If I Browse to v7.exe and select it, the Open With dialog still does not show v7.

We have to abort Open With, start FMv7, and then drag v7 file onto FM program window. Or, in FMv7 program, do File Menu > Open and navigate to v7 file.

What happened to the File Association to FM v7? And why can we not open v7 files via Open With?

Thanks,

Dave
