Cross reference issues in FrameMaker 11 DITA

$

I'm trying to upgrade from FrameMaker 9 to FrameMaker 11. My files are set up using structured FrameMaker and DITA. The ditamap is comprised of both FM files and XML files. I'm attempting to use the ditabase template and DTD and DITA 1.2.

When I open my XML files in Framemaker 11, any cross references to other chapters in the book and gone. The fm-xref tag that is there is empty. I know there are some changes to cross references between DITA 1.1 and DITA 1.2, but I'm wondering if there is a way to retain the cross references when I open the file in FM11 even if the cross reference does actually link to the referenced location. Or do I have to manually go through my document and re-enter all the cross references?

I'm also having trouble getting the cross references to use the correct font format. After searching through all the various edd files that are referenced, I found the section that applies to cross references and it seems to indicate that the font format is set in the cross reference format in FrameMaker, but I can't figure out how to change the cross reference format.

Then instructions in the Framemaker help say:

  1. Choose Special > cross-reference.
  2. Click Edit Format.
  3. ....

But I can't find anything that says "Edit Format".

Thanks for the help,

XML export of marker-based xrefs?

Colleagues,

I'm pulling my hair out a bit over issues with external cross-references in an unstructured>structured conversion. (FrameMaker 11, custom DTD).

First, I've not found a way to automatically convert _external_ cross-references from marker-based to element-based. This is a historical issue, but I thought I would raise it in case any new solutions or approaches have appeared.

If FrameMaker won't convert marker-based external cross-references, I would prefer to do this clean-up in XML. But...FrameMaker unwraps these (marker-based, unresolved) cross-reference elements on save to XML. (FM retains the _text_ of the cross-reference, but removes the cross-reference element).

Is there any way to prevent this unwrapping? The presence of an empty cross-reference element is more important to me than the cross-reference text.

Graphic elements in XML

Guys, I guess I'm kinda stupid or blind or both, but I got this trivial issue:

I try to roundtrip graphics from a simple EDD to XML and back.

So I got this pretty simple rules in EDD, DTD and RWR:

EDD:

element (graphic): image

   attribute list

      1. Name: href          String          Optional

   Initial graphic element format

     1. In all contexts

           Insert anchored frame

DTD:

<!ELEMENT image       EMPTY>

<!ATTLIST image      href       CDATA       #IMPLIED>

RWR:

element "image"

{

          is fm graphic element;

          attribute "href" is fm property file;

}

I got a basic element as top level element defined to get the image placed...

So, what bothers me is, how the hell do I get the damn href attribute told, where the image reference is? The XML output places the image element without problems - but the ref is missing.

Pulling my hairs out on this one...

Publishing DITA files in Frontmatter and Backmatter

Hello,

I am using FM11 and DITA 1.2.

I have a bookmap that consists of <frontmatter>, 3 <chapter>, 3 <appendix>, and <backmatter>.

In <frontmatter>, I have two <topicref> elements that contain DITA files

In the <backmatter> I have my glossary DTIA file.

When I save the ditamap as Book 11 with fm components none of the files in <frontmatter> and <backmatter> publish.

I have the ditafm-output.ini set up to GenerateFlatBook=1

Special Char not Translating into Horizontal Tab in Structured FM 11

In the office where I work, we are upgrading from Structured FrameMaker 8 in Win XP to Structured FrameMaker 11 in Win 7. Part of the work that I do involves importing xml feeds into Structured FrameMaker templates using an automated process. As I am testing the importing into FM 11 I am noticing that the special character code used for a horizontal tab - &#09; - is not translating into a tab after the xml feed has been imported into the FM 11 template. It does translate into a horizontal tab when imported into FM 8. What special character code should be used for horizontal tabs in FM11?

Save ditamap as Book 11 with fm components

Hello,

I have a ditamap that consists of files converted, using Mif2Go, to DITA 1.2 <concept> and <task> files. Each file is a heading from a single chapter in a manual.

The ditafm-output.ini has the following:

  • TemplateDir=$STRUCTDIR\xml\DITA_1.2\app\technicalContent\template
  • CompositeDocTemplate_1.2=ditabase.template.fm

I do not have each <concept> and <task> file wrapped in <dita>.

Questions:

  • Is there anyway to tell FM to use the respective template for each root-level element? I looked in the FM 11 ini Reference and it appears the answer to that is no.
  • If I do have to wrap the root elements in <dita>, is this considered a less than best practice?
  • If I do have to wrap in <dita>, does anybody know of any potential issues with a CMS or whatever?

FYI1: We need to go with DITA 1.2, because down the road we are going to use the learning modules.

FYI2: I will be using RobeHelp to to create Web Help from imported book files.

To Scott Prentice: Are you coming out with DITA-FMx for DITA 1.2 somewhere down the road?

Thanks,

Stan

Frame cross-references to DITA

FrameMaker 11

Vasont CMS

Arbortext editor

In order to comply with our parent company, we are converting all of our FM docs to DITA. We check before conversion to ensure all cross-refs are working.  When the cross-reference comes in to DITA from FM, it looks like this:

xref format=”dita” href=”MSC_c_Introduction.dita” scope=”local” type=”concept”

But these do not work.

When the cross-ref is created in either the CMS or in Arbortext, it looks like this:

xref href=”MSC_c_Introduction#MSC_c_Introduction/MSC_c_Intro” outputclass=”fm:HeadingOnly”

These work properly.

Is there a way to get the cross-refs from FM to have the correct syntax? Or is this not a syntax issue?

We would much rather use FM than Arbortext.

TIA,

Marsha

Control table row or cell formatting via EDD context rules?

Hi...

I think I know the answer to this, but is it possible to control table row or cell properties (like shading, padding, borders, etc) through context rules in an EDD? I'm not aware of any way to do this, but thought I'd toss it out there to be sure.

Would love to hear that I'm wrong.

Import graphic file by reference vs copy into document

Is there any way to determine which files have graphics imported by reference vs copy into document? I have MANY MANY files that I ALWAYS want to have the graphics copied to document becauseI tend to move my graphics. I accidentally used the copy by reference to some files. I know that if the graphic is moved and you open the file the graphics is grayed out. Is there any easier way to determine which files have the graphics linked instead of embedded?

Document validates but NoName is generated when opening

Hi all,

We have an xDocbook structured app based on Frame 11 and Docbook 4.2.   It has been stable until the last week or so.  Here are the changes we made to the structured app recently:

1. Added some functionality to the EDD including some Format Change Lists and attribute values, but nothing that seems major. The EDD validates and does not produce errors when its element definitions are imported into a document.

2. Added support to the DTD for an equation element to be allowed inside a line element

3. No edits to the rules.

4. In structapps.fm, we turned off "Try Alternative Extensions"

5. In the template, we added or tweaked some styles.

We retain our documents in XML and open them in Frame only to edit them.

However, each time we open any document in Frame now, a NoName element wraps whatever the top-level valid element is, whether a <chapter> or <appendix>. I can unwrap it and the document validates using the Element | Validate feature.  I save and close the document.  If I open the XML in a text editor, its top level element is <chapter>.  There is no <NoName.>  But if I open it again in FrameMaker, NoName is generated again at the top of the hierarchy. This is true even for documents that we have not edited or touched in months, so it cannot be the content itself; it must be something with the structured app.

To test, I have reverted the EDD back to a timeframe when it was known to have worked properly, and imported it into the template, then reopened the documents.  This is problematic of course because the documents currently contain attribute values that were not supported earlier, so Frame complains about these when I validate.  But the NoName element is always created no matter how far back I go with the EDD.

Finally -- and particularly strange -- is that I revert the EDD to an earlier, known stable version, import it into the template, and open some documents that we have not edited in months -- thus, recreating an environment that worked before.  Still, NoName is generated. I have not yet reverted the changes to structapps or the DTD and will try that next -- but I don't see how those could be the issue.

So the questions are:

1. What would make Frame generate a NoName element for a document that has valid structure?

2. What can trigger the generation of a NoName element?

Thanks for any help!

Stop FrameMaker resizing images in DITA?

$

I'm using FrameMaker 12 to edit topics in DITA. Unfortunately when I add an image, FrameMaker re-sizes it. I want to stop it doing this, but I can't work out how. It looks like FrameMaker correctly reads the image size in pixels, but adds the width and height in pt not px. For example, I have a 602px by 265px image that gets added to a DITA topic as the following:

<image href = "adobe.png" height="265.000px" width="602.000px"  />

How to name topics better when developing a new documentation?

Hi all,

I am encountering a problem about topic name. I think a suitable topic name is key to make href/xref or display the topic's main content. Currently, there are two solutions to the problem, for example, a topic named t_define_product_name or t_DefineProductName.

I wonder how you design the topic name or depend some rules?

Thank u in advance.

Is there any tools to support information architecture

Dear all,

Before we start the real contents development, we mainly focus on the documentations' structure, namely its outline? There is no doubt it is important to design a clear and easy search structure.

I am wondering what tools you adopt to visualize the documentations' structure?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

installing TCS3 updated for FM 10 on Windows 7 displays Adobe Application Manager may be damaged error

Can I disable image size attributes?

$

I make all of my graphics to size and I save them as AI files. When I link them into FrameMaker (11 / DITA1.2), it adds height and width attributes (in POINTS, of all things) based on the native size of the image. That's fine. However, I have had to resize graphics on a few occasions, which means the size attributes cause problems--the graphic frame is now too big or too small.

Can I get FrameMaker to NOT put in the height and width attributes, and just always bring a graphic in at its native size?

Internal Error 12024, 18652356, 18692061 and 18514761 during reopening a FM12 file

Hello everybody,

I can not open a FM12 file, the internal error code 12024, 18652356, 18692061 and 18514761 tells me nothing and I unless searching for a plain text translation for the error codes! This kind of trouble occures from time to time but now, first time on FM12. Therefore I try to check if my EDD rules producing this mistake, error or other undefined loop. I like to fix this error but I need to know where is the mistake, one week of work are be in danger in this case... !!!

Anybody a idea to fix this issue? (no *.Backup / *.Recovery file existing)

Any possibilities for "OPEN IN SAVE MODE"

Any possibilities for "CHECK FILE BEFORE TRY TO OPEN"

I can not believe that Adobe is unable to define plain text error codes, the technical support in unreachable!

Thanks for help,

FrameMaker SDK Question: How to read an XML file

$

Hi,

I am using FDK 12.0 on Windows (using Visual Studio 2012) to make some changes in a FrameMaker document programmatically. I have never used this or any other Adobe API before and am somewhat struggling with the concepts. Primarily I am using the sample programs, coming along with the FDK to guide me.

Now, I want to open and parse an XML file, whose content I will use later to manipulate the texts in a FrameMaker document. In .NET framework there are several classes (XMLReader, XMLTextReader etc.) to read and parse XML files easily. However, it seems I cannot use these Common Language Runtime classes because, apparently, a FDK plug-in needs to be a) C program and b) should not use CLR. In view that, can anyone please indicate if there are any suitable set of functions in FDK itself for parsing an XML file. Otherwise, is there any pure C based XML parser I can use? Some actual sample will be very helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Joydeep
