Getting an error while generating TOC in structured framemaker 11

Using PDF as image format

Hi, Frame users

What is your opinion on using Graphics with PDF-format when authoring DITA content, as I'm not sure that PDFs are supported as Graphics-format in DITA?

Reason for this is that I'm trying to switch from using grapics with WMF-format (exported from cad) to SVG-format, but I have experienced some problems when importing Graphics with SVG-format to FrameMaker.

Sómetimes it works, but not always, for example "the filter encountered a problem and could not complete the translation".

I have also tried checking if the files are valid with the W3C online validator.

How to create a frame or box to surround a element

Hi,

Would appreciate some help on this one, as I can't seem to figure it out.

How do you create a frame or box to surround an element, for example when using Hazardstatements.

The only way I can think of is to use tables, but is there any other way?

Example:

Danger
Some warning text
Some warning text

Thanks

Best regards

Am I missing something to do DITA?

Hi,

Running FM 8 which was installed as part of the Tech Comm package I believe.  I am looking at learning and using DITA but when I select the structured format to create a new Chapter I get a message that says the document contains structure information. This product does not read structure information. The structure will be removed.

What do I need to do to use DITA?

Thanks

EDD Context Rules for a parent element possible?

$

Hi all,

I understand the use of {first} when identifying the context of an element, such as:

If context is: {first}<Section

But what if I want to set whether Section is first inside its parent?

For instance, for this hierarchy:

<chapter>

  <section></title></section>

  <section></title></section>

</chapter>

I want to say that if <title> appears in the first <section> element within a <chapter>,  then apply a particular format.  Otherwise, apply a different format if <title> appears in a <section> that is not first within a <chapter>. -- i.e. a parent element context, if you will.

The syntax to do this is eluding me.  My EDD has a series of context rules for a <title>, including for when it appears within a <section>, like this:

Else, if context is: Section < Chapter
     If context is: <{first}<Chapter
        Use paragraph format: Heading1NoNewPage
     Else
        Use paragraph format: Heading1

Whatever syntax I try for the context rule above (that the section be first within the chapter), I get parsing errors or the rule is not read.  I've tried:

If context is: Section<Chapter{first}

If context is: <{first}<Chapter                   // invalid

If context is: Section{first}<Chapter          // applies only Heading1; never reads this

If context is: Section < {first} Chapter       // invalid

Any ideas if there is a syntax that allows you to set a context for  the parent element, and not just for the element in question?

Thanks for anyone's help on this.

Structured Framemaker/XML Resources—Where to Begin?

$

I'm new to Structured Framemaker and XML, though I've used Unstructured Framemaker for several years. My company has asked me to look into options for converting our many publications to e-book format, but I'm a bit overwhelmed and unsure where to begin. Can anyone offer a basic outline for what to focus on, in what order, and good resources for learning? I learn best by example, and links are welcome.

Thank you.

FrameMaker 11 won't start up

I'm running FrameMaker 11 on Windows 7. I just changed the settings from unstructured to structured Frame and restarted my computer. Now FrameMaker comes up for a few seconds and goes away. Is there something I can do to get FrameMaker to launch?

OTF Fonts Thai

Hello,

we are working with structured FM 8 and do translate in pretty much all languages except for Arabic. So far, there were no complaints for the Asian languages. But now, we receive the feedback that the characters for Thai (Arial Unicode) are correct but that there are spaces between some characters making it difficult to read the text. We have done various tests and recognized that all True-Type fonts are causing these problems. Now, I installed an OTF-Font for Thai and the problems stay the same. Therefor, my question if the Thai font is upported at all?

Thank you very much in advance,

column width from xml attribute to framemaker table

$

I'm trying to set the column widths of a table in framemaker by importing the width from an attribute in the imported xml file. But it doesn't work...

This is from my read/write rules:

element "ITEM-CELL-LIST"

{

is fm table cell element;

attribute "width" is fm property column width;

fm property column width value is "2cm";

}

The last line that specifies the width to 2cm seems to be accepted as I can save the EDD as DTD without errors, but it has no effect on the actual widths of the table created.

The line above it doesn't work at all. When I try to save the EDD, I get the following error: "Invalid property specified for the element (ITEM-CELL-LIST)."

I've tried every way I can think of, but nothing seems to work

The only way I've been able to actually set the widths is by creating a table in the master template page and resizing the columns. That carries over to the imported xml.

FrameMaker Server - just a dream?

I currently use FM8 for books. Our company wants me to develop a solution that I think FM can meet but I am not familiar with XML capacities of FM Server.

If I get the FM Server upgrade, can I complete these tasks?:

1) Central, web accessible location for all pdfs.
2) Role-based editing on demand (softwaer developers that need to update the docs periodically) through some web-based interface.
3) Role-based viewing of pdfs (user groups can only view pdfs applied to their group)
4) Creation of an TOC that will automatically update when documents are edited.

This is a theory question. Is it possible? Is FM8 Server using XML enough to do this? Do I need to hire programmers to develop an interface for document editors? What kind (C, Java, etc).

Requesting feedback or some ideas.

converting Framemaker files into PDF progaramatically using publishing server

Hi All

Background:
We are going for upgrade of  Frame maker 8 which is on unix system  to FM 10 or 11. We are using Framemaker mainly for renditions, i.e to convert the fm documents to PDF. To convert fm document to PDF we are using the below mentioned command line utility available in FM 8.(on unix). /opt/app/frame8.0/bin/fmprint -i -p Sample.fm.fmtpl Sample.fm Currently the the fm file which need to converted to PDF and the FM 8(installed) are available on the same unix system ,so we were able to initiate/use the command line utility of FM 8. The rendition of the FM to PDF is On -Demand.( We are not running any batch activities/ bulk renditions).We are rendering the document as soon as the document  is available.

Requirement:
As we are going to  upgrade the FM to newer versions which would be installed on the Windows machine as Frame maker 10 or 11 will not support unix plat form, so can you please let us know which option is better to use i.e we want to convert fm file to PDF using java program without any manual intevention using publishing server/client version.
can any one help us as it is very urgent for us.
please let us know the ways to do and links for helpful documents .

thank you very much for your help in advance!!\

Document that is OK for oXygen remains full of errors under FrameMaker 12

Hello everybody!

I will use Adobe FrameMaker 12 in author mode in an upcomming project, and I will continue testing it for two more weeks. As I am new to XML and document creation, I finished an online tutorial about XML and started now to create a document. I entered all files in one directory, then tested & corrected the contents with oXygen XML Author 16. Now, I opened the same files under FrameMaker 12 and have a lot of errors. As XML is a standard, I think that my code is not the problem. Do you have an idea why one & the same documents are evaluated differently by the two tools?

Thank you for your suggestions!

Note: As ist is not possible to upload a ZIP file, I add two images to show the problem.

EDD - Importing DTD with text entities declared in DTD

$

The DTD I am working with has boilerplate text entities defined in the DTD. The placement of text entities in a DTD prevents end users from making changes to that boilerplate data. When I import the DTD into the EDD, it appears that Frame is discarding the text entities defined in the DTD.

Does Frame support the creation of text entities within the EDD? I cannot find any info on text entities related to the DTD. I have read they may be brought in either as variables or text insets to the template or actual document.

I have read the following post but it does not specificially address Frame's support for text entities in the EDD. I am working with the same DTD identified in the post listed below.

http://forums.adobe.com/message/1233910#1233910

Sounds like I may have to manually import them? Once imported, is there a way to protect them from modification.

Thanks in advance.

How can a structured frame be used for translating books to foreign languages?

I keep reading about how a structured approach can improve the translation process (from english to foreign languages), however, i can't seem to find specifics about a particular method or tutorials about how to go about it (specifically). My question is, how (specifically) can structured framemaker be used for translation from english to foreign languages?  Links to tutorials on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

How do I create page breaks in the structure itself?

Hello,

I'm switching from word to structured FM and DITA. I know that I could use the lines element to create page breaks where I need them, and also insert manual page breaks at the top of the next available page.

But there must be a better way in the structure somehow, conditional on certain conditions - for example, new topics always on a new page or no separation of images from its immediately preceding reference. Please could somebody expain how I can create such page breaks in the structure.

DITA vs. roll-your-own

My team is just getting started with structured FrameMaker, and we're trying to determine whether we should use DITA or define our own EDD (etc.). DITA seems overly restrictive for our needs, so I'm leaning toward defining our own. Is there anything in DITA that we couldn't recreate (for example, tagging or map files)?

Strange things when saving to XML, disappearing tmp files

$

I am losing my mind with this one and am hoping someone has a clue to what the problem is.

I do not normally save files to XML but have done a lot of experimenting with the process. Several months ago I had a good workflow that saved my structured documents to XML with no problems. All the elements came out as expected.

Now I am trying to do the same thing but apply an XSL transform as post processing. The idea is to transform my structure into one that satisfies a different DTD. In most cases, the end result is correct, but many errors are generated in the process. Most errors are things like expected an element name and expected enumeration separator or missing parenthesis. The odd thing is that FrameMaker is referencing a tmp file in a particular folder, but I cannot find it. So, it is difficult to see what the problem is. I have even tested the process using a blank template file with just a root element in it and maybe a child inside that. I get the same set of errors at what appears to be the same line numbers. BUT no tmp file. For the record, I have hidden files and folders showing.

In most cases, the result is OK. The ONE exception I have found is related to cross-reference elements. My cross-reference elements appear in the XML without termination, even though the EDD requires that they have no content.

I even tried using a different structure application, one that worked a few months ago, and the results are the same. I checked some XML output that I did a few months ago, and all the cross-reference elements were properly terminated as <XReference/>.

If I can find a way to see those missing tmp files, maybe I could see a solution. There is a need to solve this problem, because we need to export to XML to then import that XML into a CMS system that uses a different DTD.

I am using FrameMaker 9.0p255.

Thanks for any clues that anyone might have,

Van
