fm-xref adds text to element

$

Hello,

I have been using FrameMaker 10 to convert fm files into DITA XML format. Some of my <title> elements contain "conkeyref" variables as the same topic is used in many different products.

When I cross-reference these topics, FrameMaker automatically adds the literal text in the title (including the placeholder text that my variable element uses) after the <xref> tag in my XML. When I generate the output using the DITA OpenToolkit, the cross-references do not update using the variable value, but instead use the literal text that Frame is adding.

For example, this is a line taken from the XML file:

<p><xref  type = "fm:" href = "dp_about.xml#id11CKI0FK0BI">Documentation Procedures in prodName</xref></p>

prodName is simply the placeholder text used to identify where a variable has been placed. When this is processed by the DITA OpenToolkit, Documentation Procedures in prodName displays in the output.

If I manually remove the automatically added text (as below), the output is generated properly using the defined variable value.

<p><xref  type = "fm:" href = "dp_about.xml#id11CKI0FK0BI"></xref></p>

Once I open the same XML file in FrameMaker, the cross-reference updates and the over-riding text is added back into the XML. I know that I can turn off the Auto-Load Xrefs On File Open option, but this does not help when adding a new cross-reference. This additional text is very troublesome and manually removing it from every XML file using a text editor is not an option (I currently have over 900 files in the document).

This problem also occurs if I change the title of one topic. The existing cross-references do not update to include the new title name when they are processed by the OpenToolkit.

How can I force FrameMaker to not add this text when a cross-reference is added to the XML?

Thanks

Book file has issues -

We are reviving an old DTD and check-in and -out system for use in a new Structured project document. (don't ask...).

Writers delivered everything in a single XML file, which the -check-in and -out system converts into a FrameMaker SGM file (was originally done in FramewMaker 7. I'm working in 10).

Old documents in the set show that FrameMaker used individual files for each chapter, which were then built into a single Book file, where TOC was done. The name of each individual chapter is used to get the running header. So I divided the master file into individual files, which I am able to print out using Save as PDF... Have now put all chapters into a single book, named it by saving,  and am attempting to process.

1. The book does not print using either Save as PDF or Print Book. The Log includes this statement: "Couldn't open [Book path and name]. Book Error Report.

2. Cannot insert a TOC into book. I can open Add>>Table of Contents, select the desired paragraph styles, go to the Update Book dialog, and select Generate.

All books are rejected, with the individual error messages: Could not open [filename], because it uses unavailable fonts.

There are no unavailable fonts in any of these files, so far as I can tell.

Anyone got any ideas as to what is going on?

Thanks

How can I get XML cross-references to translate to Structured FrameMaker?

I've been using Structured FrameMaker from the beginning, and have designed many EDDs, and about 10 years ago I did some translation of SGML into Structured FrameMaker (7.2) which worked well.

Now, (with FrameMaker 10), I've had to design an EDD to translate XML documents into Structured FrameMaker.

In my EDD I've a CrossReference element called XRef; this has an attribute of ID, which in turn has a value of IDReference and has Special AttributeConrols of ReadOnly.

My target elements in the EDD all have an ID attribute with a value of UniqueID.

My XML document's target xref element has  an attribute of linkend, and in XML this works as I'd expect.

When I pass the XML file through the EDD/Template, everything works except that I get an ID = no value, which, of course, results in no display of the cross-reference data in the document.

Oddly, in structured FrameMaker, my element of link, with an attribute of linkend, works as it should, and displays the data.  It may not be important, but the value for linkend is IDReference not UniqueID, and this displays correctly (I changed this attribute's value to Unique ID in my EDD and it made no difference to the XRef value in my document).

After making all these EDD changes, I've been careful to save the changes, import them to all files in my book and finally update the book.   Everything hangs together - except, of course, that the cross-reference doesn't work.

I'd sincerely appreciate any help or advice other users might have because I'm quite frankly stumped.

Framemaker 10 - DITA Image Linking - Sharepoint CMS

Hello,

I am using Adobe Framemaker 10 with DITA. I am connected, through Framemaker, to a Sharepoint CMS.

I initially created my DITA concept locally, I then added an image (HRef) and linked it to a file on my Sharepoint CMS. Finally, I 'Uploaded the Active Document' to the CMS.

When I open the document from the Sharepoint CMS the image does not display. Right-clicking and selecting Properties shows that the reference file is in the AppData\Roaming directory.

How can I correctly link the image?

Kind Regards,

Joel

Cross references in conrefs - FrameMaker does not update

Hi all,

the scenario: file A has cross refs to file B ("see chapter xxx on page yyy") and vice versa.

When I insert both files into file C via conrefs, then the cross refs do not update to show the propers chapter/page numbers when I update file C.

How can I get this to work? These are structured FM documents using the DITA 1.1 structure.

XML beginner questions

Hello,

First post on the forums in a long time, and first here altogether. I hope it's okay to jump in.

I have a bit of unstructured FM experience from several years ago and have been using Ventura since (13 years) for my company's books (longish directories--3,000+/volume). I've done some scripts in Ventura so have a little programming experience.

We're looking to switch to XML rather than the tagged text files Ventura can import because of its lack of support, problems possibly due to Win7, and the effort needed to maintain the import files. I've downloaded the FM 11 trial and have been experimenting a little with roundtripping XML and also importing what we already have in XML. So a few I'm sure very basic questions; and thanks in advance:

I've been going through the Adobe tutorials and whatever else I can find online. There don't seem to be any well-reviewed books on Amazon that deal with structured FM 9-11. Some that look promising for XML are about 10 years old--I don't think our needs are cutting edge so should I get something that old, or stick with newer even if there are complaints? Any recommendations? If I can get the hang of it with something that isn't FM specific will it be really hard to adapt that knowledge to FM?

I'm finding EDD, DTD, and Schema to be rather confusing. Would someone explain the difference in simple terms or point me to a video, etc? Assuming I'm starting with an XML file created for another purpose not meant for FM, do I need more than one of these? Do you do one first?

With Ventura if I want to have two discrete pieces of data (off the database) on the same line, say one left aligned and the other right aligned, the programmers put the two together with a tab, and that's controlled by a paragraph tag in Ventura with a right tab. With XML, if I'm understanding it correctly, you wouldn't do that in the XML file--I'm probably not ready to understand the method, just want to know if that's possible without doing something like having the second item's paragraph properties set to have no line break. If so, where would that be specified, EDD, DTD, etc?

Can XML into FM include graphics inline? How about an Excel chart?

Thank you,

Gary

Hi- I have just started using S1000d, i created  a rule in my business module( eg //description/para/emphasis) with allowedObjectFlag=0 , i have also set my Data module pointing to the business module. And so, when and how does my Data module get validated against the mentioned rule? Whenever i try to validate my Data module, it turns out as valid even though my data module has //description/para/emphasis element in it. Please let me know what should i be doing in order to catch my rule?

Can I pull prefixes/suffixes into XML ?

$

I am using prefix and suffix rules in my EDD to make things easier for the author (and standardize some headings and parts of names). Now I need to write the content into XML and my prefixes and suffixes do not get pushed into the content on the XML side. I do not find any reference to prefix and suffix in the read-write rules. Is there a way to let FM write the prefixes into either an attribute or the content of an element when writing to XML? I am not interested in round-tripping here, so even if the method is more or less destructive, I would be more than happy to know about it. The only other option I see is adding more work to the extendscript that I am using to prepare the materials for writing to XML.

Thanks

No hierarchy structure in PDF output from ditamap

$

I am trying to publish a ditamap to pdf with FM11. Adobe seems to recommend to save as a FM book with components and then to PDF. Then the hierarchy was lost in the PDF even though it looks very good in the FM book structure.

Almost all topics are rendered as a  chapter;

the exception is when the chapter has a href to a dita file;

all sections are rendered as a section no matter where this section belong to and which layer its parent topic is on;

all the topic title use title.0 para tag, and sections use title.1 para tag, so they are all included in the TOC as chapters and sections, no matter which layer they are on in the ditamap;

the numbering of chapter/section are in a mess.

I have looked into the ditafm-output.ini and didn't find useful settings. Any suggestions or clue? or FrameMaker is only not capable for these issues? or can only publish a flat topic PDF?

Thanks!

How many EDDs and templates do I need?

$

Hello,

I'm planning to set up a documentation project using DITA (1.2) and I'm evaluating which editor would be better. The output will be PDF files (in various formats: A4, A5 and Letter for various documents: instructions for use, technical manual, etc) and the content will be translated in more than 20 languages (including Japanese, Chinese and Korean).

I saw that some consultant managed to define only one EDD for all languages but then does it mean that if I can't have one, I need one EDD per language? Then do I need one template per EDD or can I have several templates for an EDD?

Best regards,

Annette

Parser error message: Required attribute 'cols' was not provided

$

I'm having trouble with a ditamap in FM 12 because two of the files refuse to save. They send up the parser error message "Required attribute 'cols' was not provided".

They both contain tables imported by conref. The error seems to arise on the tgroup element. Yet the Attributes table for tgroup does not seem to contain a cols attribute and I can't see where to define it or how.

In another DITA editor, XMLMind Personal Edition, I have no trouble opening and saving both the destination and imported conref source files. They seem to have the cols attribute correctly defined.

What is going wrong in FM and how can I fix it? It's annoying that a big expensive tool should be so much harder to use than a free one!

Thanks to all,

Referencing Table Numbers in Structured Framemaker 12

$

I am evaluating Structured Framemaker 12 using DITA. I have placed a cross reference to several tables in my topics and want to reference them from the paragraph text e.g. Table 1, Table 2, etc. The Format Options I see are for DITA Default Format or for Figures (Figure, See_Figure, See_Title_and_Page, Title_and_Page) - none of which work. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong or missing?

DITA Open Toolkit (DITA-OT) nothing happens when building output

Hi

I'm trying to generate PDF2/XHTML using the DITA Open Toolkit with FrameMaker 12 but nothing happens when building the output.

I can see the command line start but is then immediately shutdown, and there is nothing generated in the output folder.

I have installed the Java JDK and set the Java_Home variable (before that the output options box didn't open).

Do anyone have a glue what is wrong?

Problem import/view svg with FM11 (Win7)

Goodmorning,

First sorry for my english.

I have a big problem with the new version of Framemaker 11.

if I create an xml connecting the external svg (created in Illustrator) Framemaker with version 11 (Windows 7), raster images inside the svg are not displayed in the preview, only text and vector files.

If I try to open an xml file created with version Framamaker like 9 or 11 on windows XP the element "stepimage" with whom I connect the svg are no longer present on the tree.

If I insert again the stepimage tree, they become disproportionate size.

In fact, opening them with Illustrator CC dimensions have changed (I have not edited the picture.)

However, still do not appear raster files.

I hope someone can help me.

Thanks

Query about structured Frame templates

$

In Frame 12 all the templates have been updated.

I built my book using unstructured templates because I wanted to get a feel for the changes from my last version of Frame (8).

I now think I will need to redo the book entirely using the templates from structured Frame.

The unstructured Frame template for a book has all master pages in every file in the book. The structured template for Chapter has only master pages: left, right, first. Is there a reason for this? (Should not every file in the book have the same master and reference pages?)

Thanks.

dynamically read topics

Hi,

I'm very new to DITA, I understand XML but am looking to create more documents using it and DITA/Framemaker seems the way to go.

Is it possible to create a document that looks through all of the topics in a folder then creates a new topic from those (essentially a summary), pulling out certain elements?

I'm looking at a timesaving mechanism, so that I can have lots of folders with subjects in each (ie - several topics) then be able to quickly create either summary sheets or note sheets from that content

Many thanks

John.

Nested tables

$

Hi all,

there is some Information in the Framemaker help how to nest tables in structured documents but I simply don't understand how to implemend this. This is a DITA document and I know that nesting tables is very bad style. However it is a requirement and after all DITA does support it.

In unstructured documents we used anchored Frames in table cells. The approach for structured documents seems similar:

"Select a graphic element for empty anchored frames in the Element Catalog, and click New Frame"

I wonder how I can accomplish this. In the EDD I would have to set up an element (perhaps a dedicated paragraph class) to insert an anchored Frame in which then the table is inserted.

Has anybody succeeded in using nested tables in structured documents with Framemaker?

Bullets as Wingdings characters not working

FM 8.0p277

I created an EDD with nested bulleted lists using Wingdings characters for the bullets (a different character to represent each bullet level). It worked fine for previous documents, but for some reason, now when I import that EDD into a new document, it shows a letter "n" where the n used to be (Wingdings equivalent of the "n") a "p" where the p should be and a "w" where the w should be. I'm not sure what has changed - I'm guessing something with my fonts, but I'm not sure where to look or what to change. I found other users with similar issues, but in their cases it happened when converting a FM document to PDF. I haven't even gotten that far yet. Any help would be appreciated.
