Problem import/view svg with FM11 (Win7)

Goodmorning,

First sorry for my english.

I have a big problem with the new version of Framemaker 11.

if I create an xml connecting the external svg (created in Illustrator) Framemaker with version 11 (Windows 7), raster images inside the svg are not displayed in the preview, only text and vector files.

If I try to open an xml file created with version Framamaker like 9 or 11 on windows XP the element "stepimage" with whom I connect the svg are no longer present on the tree.

If I insert again the stepimage tree, they become disproportionate size.

In fact, opening them with Illustrator CC dimensions have changed (I have not edited the picture.)

However, still do not appear raster files.

I hope someone can help me.

Thanks

FM 12 xslt preprocessing

Hi,

I've got an XML application that works w/o problems on FM9 and FM 11, but not in FM 12. If my structapps does not have any preprocessing XSLT, everything works. But if it has, XSLT processor (Xalan used, not Saxon HE), XSLT processor gives me error: java.io.FileNotFoundException: Could not find file: <path_to_source_xml>\dtd_file, so it looks like xalan cannot resolve the public identifier and tries to locate dtd  from same folder. I have declared the entity locations with public ID + path\filename in structapps (and uses default API client).

What might be wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Martti

How do I extract/view all help topic IDs in a book file?

Hi,

So, we have a document (1000+ pages long) with hundreds of help topic IDs that were auto generated when the document was first created. We now need to access certain sections of the documents and make updates, but the only point of reference given is the help topic ID.

Is there a way in which we can extract the help topic IDs along with the heading name, or at least view where each help topic ID is?

Publishing DITA content through DITA-OT or Save as PDF?

Hi Frame users and DITA enthusiasts

I would like to ask for your opinions when publishing DITA content to PDF, either with DITA-OT or Adobe PDF.

This is my first DITA Project and I been testing and playing around with both options but feeling stuck as I can't decide which option to go with.

Both the DITA-OT or Save as PDF will require some modifications, so I rather do things the hard way, then having to go back and create a new publishing template later.

Thanks and best regards

Hierachical element insert

In FrameMaker 11 it was possible to use the quick Element Catalog to select a Hierachical element. For example, from the Quick Element Catalog I could highlight ItemizedList, then to the right the child elements would appear as I moused over it and I could then select ListItem, and then Para. Clicking the hierarchical Para element would insert Para, ListIem, and ItemizedList elements in the proper nested order.

In FrameMaker 12 I cannot do this. Am I missing something?

I found the following link in the Help files, but it isn't functional.

How do I change Caution to red text?

I am writing a DITA document. I am trying to change the color of the Note element choice "caution" text from black, which is the default, to red. I've tried changing things in the commonelements.mod, but with no luck. I know you can do this. I am not a programmer, so it would be helpful to have it explained in a step-by-step manner.

Thanks

FrameMaker - Good choice for building database driven website?

I am moving toward data heavy websites (the more data the better) and wondering if FM 12 will work for creating the database and the site. Obviously I am new to FM but I have been reading the help files and various white papers but there is not much info on this so I am wondering if my assumption is incorrect. Can I create interactive forms in FM? Webpages that run from a database created in FM? Will web pages created in FM be bulky with extra unnecessary code or will they be lean? I have read about FM being able to export in HTML5 but I wonder what the actual quality and functionality of the resulting pages/website/mobile site. Your opinions are welcome.

Nested tables

Hi all,

there is some Information in the Framemaker help how to nest tables in structured documents but I simply don't understand how to implemend this. This is a DITA document and I know that nesting tables is very bad style. However it is a requirement and after all DITA does support it.

In unstructured documents we used anchored Frames in table cells. The approach for structured documents seems similar:

"Select a graphic element for empty anchored frames in the Element Catalog, and click New Frame"

I wonder how I can accomplish this. In the EDD I would have to set up an element (perhaps a dedicated paragraph class) to insert an anchored Frame in which then the table is inserted.

Has anybody succeeded in using nested tables in structured documents with Framemaker?

Problems opening a .sgm file in FM 7.2

I'm trying to open an .sgm file in Structured FrameMaker 7.2 and I keep getting errors and believe my setting are incorrect.  This is what happens:

  1. Open file.
  2. Prompt:  "Use Structured Application."  I choose "<No Application>"
  3. Error:  "SGML Parser Messages (Document Prolog)"

                    C:\Documents and Settings\............filename.sgm; line 1

                    Could not find external document type VIB (-//Company Name//DTD VIB//EN).

I really don't know where to go with this, so any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Automatically insert element tag around 'inline' cross-references

$

Hi all,

When you have a cross reference that was created around, say, just a chunk of text, Framemaker will not preserve any sort of cross-reference information on export to XML, beyond just making sure the text associated with the cross reference is exported correctly.

As it states in the structured application developer manual:

Whether or not the cross-reference element has an IDREF attribute, if the source of the cross-
reference is not an element, then FrameMaker exports the cross-reference element as text. That
is, the fact that an element was present in the FrameMaker document is lost; instead, the text
content provided by the cross-reference format appears in the markup document.

I was trying to figure out a way to use read/write rules to automatically generate a tag of some sort around such inline cross-references. I have an element for cross references in my DTD named Xref, so I tried this:

element "Xref" {
   is fm element "Xref";
}

Unfortunately, this didn't do anything.  This is my first day using Framemaker, so I'll readily admit I may be a little bit lost.

Does any one have any suggestions as to how I can preserve cross-reference information, on export to XML? I want to create an XML toolchain that reads in this XML; and currently it's not really possible to pick up cross-references.

Seth

Cross-reference between structured and unstructured FM documents

$

Hello,

Is it possible to retain FM cross-references from structured to unstructured FM documents during an XML round trip?

From what I know, cross-references between or inside structured documents form pairs of ID and IDREF, while cross-references to unstructured documents are dumped as normal text and lose their functionality.

The unstructured target documents might be converted to Structured FM at some point, but for the time being I'd like to find another solution. Do you know any solution to this?

Thanks,

Johannes

Structured Basics for a Beginner

I apologize in advance if this post rehashes a previous thread or topic.

My shop has been working with unstructured Framemaker for several years, but recent developments require us to do two things:

1. Convert old documents from unstructured to structured.

2. Create new structured documents from scratch.

I have a very basic understanding of HTML and XML, but I find all of the official and unofficial help files for working with structured documents incomprehensible. Nothing appears to start at the beginning and step forward in logical progression to build a sound grasp of fundamentals.

Do resources exist for people like me who have never worked in structured documents and have only a basic understanding of XML?

Thank you for your time and attention.

Idref tag for XRef element has no value

$

I am using FM 8 on Windows.

I have a structured document where many sections of the document will cross-reference to a table.

Specifically, I have an XRef element with an Idref attribute that will point back to a TableTitle element in the target table.

Nearly all of these work, but every once in a while one of the Idref attribute will be = <no value> and colored red in the Structure View.

The cross reference is correct, I can Alt-Ctrl-click the reference and it will take me to the correct table. But when I export to XML the Idref is empty and my XSLT logic that attempts to follow this reference breaks down because it cannot find the target.

It doesn't seem to matter where I set the target, I can re assign the XRef to point to another table that other Idref have no problem with, and this one still shows <no value>. I can remove the XRef element and add it back in, set up the target and it's still <no value>.

What I have to do is find another XRef element that has a valid Idref, make a copy of that XRef element and attribute, then re-assign that Idref to my desired cross reference target and it will then pick up the correct Id value from the Table Title.

While this works, I am confused as to why Framemaker creates crossreference with <no value> in the first place.

Thanks for any insight!

New-user resources for authoring DITA with FrameMaker 10?

Might as well ask the same question about DITA. I'm gearing up to write a bunch of new docs and am considering switching to XML. Since we already own FrameMaker, I'll use that if there's no good reason to switch.

Can anyone point me to some introductory material on creating a DITA project in FrameMaker and maybe some better sample projects than come with the product?

XSLT to convert XML into Tables

$

Hi,

I'm trying to import my XML data into a table format. After adding an XSL file to my Structure Application as a Preprocessing Stylesheet, and importing my XML instance file with the Template file opened, the "Unknown File Type" error window appeared asking for a file format to Convert From. Picking any one doesn't create a table.

The XSL file tranforms the XML data into an HTML file that has a table with columns corresponding to the XML data. I was thinking using that type of XSL because it renders tables.

Below is the XSL markup:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">

<xsl:template match="/">

  <html>

  <body>

  <h2>Products</h2>

    <table border="1">

      <tr bgcolor="#9acd32">

        <th>Title</th>

        <th>Number</th>

        <th>Date</th>

      </tr>

      <xsl:for-each select="Products/Product">

      <tr>

        <td><xsl:value-of select="Title"/></td>

        <td><xsl:value-of select="Number"/></td>

        <td><xsl:value-of select="Date"/></td>

      </tr>

      </xsl:for-each>

    </table>

  </body>

  </html>

</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

Title, Number, and Date are child elements of the Product element, which is a child element of the Products root element in my XML file.

Am I applying the stylesheet correctly here? Am I using the write kind of stylesheet?

Thanks,

zeb

Does anyone have an example of a conversion table?

I am almost killed by this. By the way, I am converting unstructured to sturctured.

using reltables - creating links to the same type of topics

I have created my relationship table with the three columns (concept, reference and task) and everything works fine. Now what do I need to do in my table if I want to link a *reference* topic to another *reference* topic? I have tried to put the two reference topics in the same cell, but it doesn't work.

Thanks

FM 11 XML View corrupts DITA source files

$

This behavior is observed in DITA on FrameMaker 11.0.1.382 on Windows 7.

If I am editing a file that contains the <codeblock> element, make any change to that file in the XML View, and then save the file, FrameMaker adds 4 tab characters to the beginning of every line in the file and also deletes any leading spaces that exist inside <codeblock>. In effect, it is saving pretty printing from the XML View, corrupting my DITA source in the process. It does not matter whether I make the save in the XML View or return to WYSWIG View before doing so.

If the file does not contain a specialization of <pre>, no corruption occurs (evidenced by no proliferation of tab characters).

Please tell me I have missed a setting that would eliminate this problem.

Preserving Idref in Cross Reference when Converting from Unstructured to Structured

$

Hi,

I am currently in the process of converting from Unstructured FrameMaker files to DITA using FrameMaker 11.

When I structure the document using the conversion table, I'd like to be able to save the Idref value for the cross-reference as an attribute in the element it is wrapped in. At the moment, when I structure the document, all I can manage is to wrap the text in a <xref> element.

Is this possible?

Cheers,

Zane

In making an EDD for a book where one file might be a chapter (or appendix), is the

Element (Container): Chapter

Valid as the highest-level element?

or is only the whole book (FrameBook) valid as the highest-level element?

Using Frame 12.
