How does one organize elements in the EDD?

$

Seems to me that EDD is a huge document to find anything in. Does one just add elements in alphabetical order so they can be rediscovered? Any tips or tricks about organizing this?

I'm in the analysis/design phase of going through my unstructured document to see how to build an EDD. Does one do the analysis using a spreadsheet?

Thanks for ideas.

"tabstyle" attribute of table element not supporting multiple values

After many trials and errors, I have structured my many legacy documents (using CALS for the table structure), but I did them several months ago. I now have a "leftover" document that I followed my procedure step-by-step to convert it to a structured FM doc as well; however, when I test saving the structured FM doc as an XML file, I get the following error messages for the many tables in the doc:
"Error at line nnn, char 45, Message: Attribute 'tabstyle' does not support multiple values"

I can use the same EDD, DTD, and r/w rules to correctly save my previously structured docs to XML with no such errors, but not this one. Any idea what I've done... or not done... to cause this error?

Thanks in advance...

Structured Cross-References

Morning everyone

I'm currently working in a structured template in Frame 9. I am trying to insert a reference to a graphic that I have already created in the structure. The problem I am having, which it seems to me that I am doing something wrong is that when I go to insert a refint element, it brings up the cross-reference box, but under the elements listing in the document, it doesn't contain the title element. I am trying to reference to the title element that is a child of the graphic element.

There are only a few elements showing and even less that contain any text. Can someone help me out and tell me what I am doing wrong?

I have also saved this back to Frame 8 and I still have the same problem. I am also the one developing the structured application, so it is possible that the problem may reside with the application itself.

Thank you

Help with XSL transforms

I am new to working with Structured FrameMaker and am struggling to successfully implement an XSLT transformation. I want to transform a doxygen output in XML into a formatted FrameMaker document/book. I am using FrameMaker 7.2, and using the Using XSLT in FrameMaker 7.2 Technical Paper as a guide. I have been able to create an EDD and an application, but I am having trouble understanding how to use the EDD to format my document. Is anyone aware of other resources that can assist me?

Structured Cross-References will be the death of me.

I've almost got my application perfect, except for the "special" items. I'm a little confused with read/write rules and I'm not even sure they are mandatory, so I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I'm in FrameMaker 9, structured environment. I'm not round-tripping; I am only exporting to XML from .fm files.

When I export anything with a cross-reference, I receive the following error:

Error at line X, char X, Message: Expected end of tag 'refint'.

"refint" is my cross-reference element.

Sure enough, in the XML, this is what I receive:

<prclist2><prcitem2><prcitem><para>Fuelers performing into plane
fueling/defueling procedures must be fully trained and
able to read, write and speak English. Or, the fueler must be monitored
by an individual who is fully trained on XXs fueling/defueling
procedures and able to read, write and speak English. (Ref. <refint
    format = "Section"
    srcfile = "../Current/FUELING_03-02.fm#BGBFECIH"> for additional
information.)</para></prcitem></prcitem2>

Anyone have a clue what is wrong here? I'm reaching the end of my rope!

Thanks so much in advance!

fm8 and png graphics in XML export

Hi,

If I add a gif-image (for example) to structured doc and write out XML, fm8 writes out the dpi value to dpi-attribute (dtd uses default fmimage attrs in this case) if the facet is not resized. If it wsa resized, frame writes out impsize. This is correct behaviour for raster images.

If I use png images, frame never writes the dpi value out and reading the xml back produces very bad quality image. This is a major problem, since the png's are not all with same dpi.

Frame 9.0.3 patch seems to contain some changes to png-support, is this related maybe?

Flowing in Structured FrameMaker

I am revising a template so that it has several different master page versions of the back page. These different versions correspond to different financial funds. These individual funds are separated into different xml files that are separately flowed into the FrameMaker template using an automated process.

The 3 xml files that I am using use the same master pages for the front matter and the body of the documents. The only difference is that they need to use different master pages for the back page.

In structured FrameMaker, how do I control the flow of the data so that I can import all 3 xml files into the same FrameMaker template and automate it so that the back page data flows into the correct back page master page?

Importing SVG images into DITA topics / controlling the size

$

Hi Framers,

I'm currently evaluating DITA using FM9 p250 and the DITA FMx plugin. If we should adopt DITA, we'd need a replacement for the vector graphics formats we currently use. I'm considering SVG because of the roundtrip options. We could use Illustrator or Visio to create them. I created some sample files and imported them into a DITA topic but I can't seem to control the display size.

When I use File - Import - File, the size settings in the import dialog seem to have no effect. I can then scale the image via the object properties, but I'm losing these changes when the topic is closed.

I believe that someone reported a problem with SVG and FM 8 in this forum. Is this behavior a known bug, even in FM 9, or am I doing something wrong during the import?

Are there any DITA attributes I could set to control the size?

Thanks for any help

FM8 XML Cookbook problem with StructureView window

I'm trying to follow the introductory lessons in the cookbook and on page 14, it says to open the Structure View page. I can open the page, but it's blank! The structapps.fm file is open, has text and I can view the Element Boundaries, but there is nothing in the Structure View window. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I have some other setting wrong? Any help would be appreciated

Absolute path in Doctype DTD makes DTD unavailable on other machines

$

Hi all,

When saving to XML, I understand that Frame takes the relative path to the DTD as described in structapps.fm (in our case, $STRUCTDIR\xml\xdocbook\app\docbookx.dtd) and generates an absolute path in the XML it writes, like this:

DOCTYPE chapter SYSTEM "file:///C:/Program%20Files/Adobe/FrameMaker9/structure/xml/xdocbook/app/docbookx.dtd"...

This, of course, makes the files impossible to open on a machine that has Frame installed in something other than "Program Files". Any way to get around this? Have Frame generate a relative path in some way? I've researched this in the ref and dev guides and don't see any way to control this. I did try adding something to the rules, like this...

writer external dtd is system "docbookx.dtd";

but then Frame just looks directly in the folder that contains the document you're trying to open.

Thanks for any suggestions.

FM 10 xref format changes when updating file

$

I'm authoring in structured FM 10 using a DITA 1.2 application on Windows 7, but working with FM documents rather than XML files. I was having problems updating cross-references in my existing (structured FM 7.2) files after upgrading to FM 10 -- FM was changing all xref formats to DITA Default Format, which blew away all of my defined formats. So I opened one of the standard structured templates included with FM 10 (DITA_1.2/app/technicalContent/template/topic.template.fm), thinking that I set up my structured application incorrectly.

I know I must be missing something simple, but this is what happens when I create and update a cross-reference:

  1. Using the unmodified structured template and the unmodified DITA 1.2 application that comes with FM 10, add an fm-xref element.
  2. Using the DITA-Cross-Reference dialog box, create the xref (doesn't matter if it's an internal or external xref).
  3. Select See_Title_and_Page xref format. Xref looks fine in the source document.
  4. Select Edit > Update Reference, and select All Cross-References.

When I click Update, FM updates the xref but changes the xref format to DITA Default Format. I can see that the See_Title_and_Page format included in the template uses the <$paratext> building block instead of <$elemtext>, but I can't delete or modify this format and I can't create a new xref format, either, since the DITA Cross-Reference dialog box doesn't give me those options.

However, if I create a new FM book and add this file to it, and then select Edit > Update Book, and select All Cross-References, FM updates the xref and maintains the xref format I chose.

So, why does updating a file remove the selected formats from all xrefs and replace them with DITA Default Format, while updating a book does what I'd expect (and what FM has always done)? And why can't I modify an xref format using the template/DITA 1.2 application that comes with FM10?

Thanks for any assistance.

eSeminar 10/2: Debugging XSLT with FM 11

$

Just a reminder that I will be speaking on using FM 11 to debug XSLT at 10:00 AM Pacific time on October 2. To register, go to http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/event/index.cfm?event=detail&id=2076630&loc=en_us.

This presentation follows on both Tom Aldous's recent 5-part introduction to XSLT (http://tmaldous.com/2012/06/15/5-part-eseminars-series-find-out-how-to-write-xslt-statemen ts-for-xml-to-xml-transformations) and the talk I gave on September 5 on using a structured FrameMaker application to edit XSLT itself (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/event/index.cfm?event=set_registered&id=2085111&loc=en_us).

This packed and fun-filled hour will use an example in which conversion of an unstructured document to XML uses XSLT to augment results produced by a conversion table. I will demonstrate modifying the XSLT transformation, testing it in FM 11's XML view, and opening the result back in the WYSIWYG view to confirm that the desired formatting is produced. I will use an XSLT advanced run to apply the transformation only to relevant files in a directory and then use XPath to find and inspect documents that happen to contain the newly supported construct. In conclusion, I will compare the convenience of staying within FM and switching between the XML and WYSIWYG views as opposed to using another XSLT engine to process files that will be opened in FM.

Framemaker 10 - DITA Image Linking - Sharepoint CMS

Hello,

I am using Adobe Framemaker 10 with DITA. I am connected, through Framemaker, to a Sharepoint CMS.

I initially created my DITA concept locally, I then added an image (HRef) and linked it to a file on my Sharepoint CMS. Finally, I 'Uploaded the Active Document' to the CMS.

When I open the document from the Sharepoint CMS the image does not display. Right-clicking and selecting Properties shows that the reference file is in the AppData\Roaming directory.

How can I correctly link the image?

Kind Regards,

Joel

How to adjust R/W rules to display images inline?

$

Hi all,

out of the box, when I insert an image in a paragraph (DITA 1.2) then FrameMaker 12 uses the "below line" display setting. I need to display it inline, at the insertion point.

When I adjust the settings of the anchored frame then the inline setting is lost when saving the XML file. So evidently I need to adjust the R/W rules.

I tried to add a corresponding inline rule but had no success so far, does anybody know what needs to be done? It seems like a quite common requirement to display images inline.

DITA specialization - domain specialization

$

Hi,

I'm trying to create some special elements with DITA domain specialization in Adobe FrameMaker 10. I tried first with "codetable". It's derived from "simpletable", and can be inserted directly after "cmd" in task topics. I followed instructions in http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/10.0/DITA/framemaker_10_dita_integration.pdf. Everything goes well with the specialization. After the EDD, r/w rule, and template files are created, I modified elements "step" and "substep" in EDD to the following and import the EDD to the template:

General rule:(note | hazardstatement)*, cmd, (codetable | choices | choicetable | info | itemgroup | stepxmp | substeps | tutorialinfo)*, (stepresult)?

Then I create a new task (with structured app properly set), insert step, cmd, codetable. Everything is fine until I save the file. It prompts:

Image 4.png

It seems that my changes are not adopted by the content model. Anything I was missing during the process. Could anyone please help? Thanks!

Document that is OK for oXygen remains full of errors under FrameMaker 12

Hello everybody!

I will use Adobe FrameMaker 12 in author mode in an upcomming project, and I will continue testing it for two more weeks. As I am new to XML and document creation, I finished an online tutorial about XML and started now to create a document. I entered all files in one directory, then tested & corrected the contents with oXygen XML Author 16. Now, I opened the same files under FrameMaker 12 and have a lot of errors. As XML is a standard, I think that my code is not the problem. Do you have an idea why one & the same documents are evaluated differently by the two tools?

Thank you for your suggestions!

Note: As ist is not possible to upload a ZIP file, I add two images to show the problem.

Yesterday, I downloaded FM v12 Trial, upgraded to full version with license/serial number, and used it with some existing .fm files for initial testing.

Today, using same icon on Start Menu and/or Desktop, I only have XML Author.

What happened to full install?

generating PDF output with DITA-FMx

I am evaluating DITA-FMx to get professional PDF output from my ditamaps and thanks to the useful video from saprentice, I am able to get a working PDF, with numbered chapters, page numbering, and so on. But now I am stuck with the following:

- Preface and notices are numbered and they shouldn't. How do I remove numbering from them?

- chapters appear twice in the TOC: once numbered and then again without numbers.

Thanks

FrameMaker 10 not allowing track text edits when ditamap is open

I am new to structured FrameMaker (and FM as well). I have been editing my colleague's DITA XML files in FrameMaker 10. I

typically open a variables.xml file first, then I open the individual xml files to edit, using the Track Text Edits feature. Now, I opened the ditamap for these files (for the first time). Then I clicked one of the xml files in the ditamap to edit, and the Track Text Edits looks like it's analyzing the ditamap file for several minutes, then displays this message: "Finished Enable Track Text Edit in Map." It will not let me select the xml file to edit. It works fine as long as I don't open the ditamap. Does anyone know why?

Thanks.
