FDK - Change highest level element (NoName) to get a new FM Book valid

$

0

Hi everyone,

Using the FDK I have saved a DITAMAP (referencing several concept files) as a Book with FM components and the resulting book is invalid with the highest level element of NoName.

If I select the NoName element in FrameMaker's structure view, then select concept within the element catalog and click the Change button my book is now valid after an Update Book.

Is there a way using the FDK to achieve a valid book after the save operation?

Using the FDK I am outlining a means of selecting all elements in the book, wrapping everything in a concept element, then selecting the NoName element and unwrapping it. To me this option feels like I am correcting structure as a result of not previously defining the structure of the saved book.

The newly created book file already has element definitions for concept without importing.

Could this be a case of some way specifying a template to be used during the save?

If I can provide any further details please don't hesitate to ask.

Any input at all would be much appreciated.

Level rules for nested codeblocks

$

I am trying to modify the level rules to apply indentation to codeblock elements, which I have allowed for nesting so we can create good code samples.

I have my level rules set up like this, but everything is still flush with the left margin when I am authoring:

Text format rules

If level is: 1

Basic properties

Indents

First indent: 0

Else, if level is: 2

Basic properties

Indents

Move first indent by: +0.5”

Else, if level is: 3

Basic properties

Indents

Move first indent by: +0.10”

Else, if level is: 4

Basic properties

Indents

Move first indent by: +0.15”

Anyone who's done this more often than me have any ideas? I have tried with both a FirstIndent, FirstIndentChange, LeftIndent, and LeftIndent change and whenever I apply the element definitions to my topic it still does not work.

How can I add an mp4 to a DITA topic?

Hello,

I'm new to structured FrameMaker and to DITA. I'm using TCS5.

I'm having to compile a set of training materials that include video tutorials generated out of Captivate. I'm thinking I might have a ditamap of the text tutorial with all its concepts and tasks as topics, and then a separate topic at the end with the video, to which the others could link. I'd prefer to use the mp4 format rather than the outdated swf.

I've found how to do this by saving the ditamap as a Frame book with composite fm files. Of course I can just import the mp4 into the corresponding fm file. But this import is then not reflected or present in the pure dita topic and that makes exchangeability and re-use problematic. Ideally I would like to be able to do everything in pure dita without having to pass through fm files, much harder to maintain.

I've seen there is an "object" element in DITA which can be used to include video streaming, but I can't for the life of me find intelligible instructions on how to use it. The mp4 files would be in a folder of a local directory, or eventually in a sub-folder of our company web-site host.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Font substitution When converting FM11 file to PDF

$

I am working in a FM11 – Win 7 environment. We upgraded 2 font families recently:
Imago Book upgraded to Imago BQ
Bembo upgraded to Bembo Std

I am attempting to save a FrameMaker 11 file as a pdf. When I attempt to do this, the pdf is not embedding the Imago BQ Bold font. It is substituting it with Imago BQ BoldItalic. I am pdfing a number of FM11 files that have been formatted in different templates. I am not experiencing this problem with these FM11 files. It is only occurring with a set of FM11 files formatted in one template.

I can’t figure out why this font substitution is occurring. Has anyone encountered this issue ? How do I resolve it?

I am using Adobe Acrobat X Pro.

Thanks,
Brenda

What does "Expressions and conditions settings in the book are inconsistent" mean?

$

I'm using structured FrameMaker 10 on Windows 7, and I'm using AXCM 3.11 to filter my book. For the first time, I'm getting an error message that I've never seen before when I update the book: Expressions and conditions settings in the book are inconsistent. It's complaining about the first chapter. I'm used to the message about inconsistent condition settings, so I've deleted all the conditions from Chapter 1 and the TOC, and imported the conditional settings from the cover, but I still get that error. In desperation, I've copied the Conditional Text Setting from the TOC to the rest of the manual, but I still get that error. I also tried copying the Conditional Text Settings from chapter 1 to the rest of the manual; no good.

The funny thing is that in the filtered book, I was able to get rid of the error by deleting all the conditional text settings in the TOC and chapter 1, and importing the settings from the cover. I don't know what's different about the source book.

I also read someone's post on the FrameMaker discussion list where someone was getting used to FrameMaker 11 and they got this message. They didn't know where to look for more information, and they said they had not set any conditions nor used any conditional text, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree?

Any suggestions are welcome.

XML read errors--failure to open dtd (DITA)

$

Hi all,
I've run out of ideas and places to look on this one, I hope someone can help.

The specs: WinXP Pro, Frame 8.0p277. Built-in DITA. Not using DITA Open Toolkit. No major issues except for previously discussed conref problems which, many thanks to Scott, seem to be under control.

The context: I'm a freelancer, on contract to a financial institution. I work part-time in my own office (up-to-date, preferred set-up) and part-time onsite. I can't go into detail, but the set-up is less than ideal. I have to do much back-and-forth portaging of project and template files, and they are often corrupted when I reopen them.

Specs onsite I'm not sure about, but it's definitely Frame 8 with the first patch. I'm pretty sure they haven't installed any others, so the 8.03 patch shouldn't be an issue. (I'll check and report back, if that info is needed.)

The error: Came out of the blue last week, my first day back in my office after three days onsite. Now, every time I open or create any xml file, using any template, I get an XML Read Report Log error that reports a failure to open the DTD, and a parse error in the document prolog. I don't know where it's coming from, and I don't know why it started happening. I modified structapps once, many months ago, but hadn't touched it since, and I've never touched the r/w rules files in either location.

(I realize I should test this scenario onsite, but I daren't risk importing trouble, if it started here.)

Specifically, the error reads: Could not open DTD file: C:\Documents and Settings\path-to-project-files-folder\ditabase.dtd Parse error at line 9, char 1: Error procssing external entity reference.

I don't understand why it's looking for the dtd file in the same folder as the project files when I've never stored it there, and I have the following in the structapps, and r/w rules files.

DTD: $STRUCTDIR\xml\dita\default-app\dtd\ditabase.dtd
Read/write rules: $STRUCTDIR\xml\dita\default-app\DITA-Topic-FM\topic.rules.txt

The R/W Rules statement reads: writer external dtd is public "-//OASIS//DTD DITA Composite//EN" "ditabase.dtd";

I can go completely cross-eyed after a few hours trying to parse these docs myself. The answer may well be right in front of me, but for the life of me I can't see it. I hope someone else can.

What to Do Now That I've Got Structured Content?

$

Hello FrameMaker Gurus.

I've been working as a lone writer for a software company for many years. We have a 1300 page product manual that was originally authored in unstructured FrameMaker. We then use WebWorks to generate "Webhelp" that is both hosted online publically and installable with the software. You can see it here:

http://www.tableausoftware.com/currentonlinehelp

In preparation for multiple writers as well as multiple products, I have since converted the content to structured XML using the DITA DTD. I still author in Structured FrameMaker working from the XML files. I am now considering my options for how to generate the final output. My problem with webhelp templates is that the output is a framed help system connected by javascript links. That format makes it difficult to get the help pages to be indexed by search engines because they cannot get into the frames and if they do they cannot follow the javascript links. Further, webhelp output is isolated from our other UA content on the corporate website (e.g., knowledge base articles, forums, etc.). Our customers need to be able to search across all of these resources. The webhelp is a stand alone system with its own search. Additionally, we would like to have more cross linking into the help pages from other sources. The framed webhelp seems to make those deep dive links difficult. Finally, the look and feel of most webhelp (even with a fair amount of CSS/customization) is clunky at best. 1999 called, they want their help system back.

My thinking is that in order to get a help system that is easily indexable by search engines and integrates with our other content (managed by Drupal), I will have to generate unframed HTML pages that have the TOC built into the pages. Then I can either point a search appliance at it to unify Drupal content and help content in a single search or I can import the HTML into Drupal as part of my publish process. The HTML pages would be generated using the DITA open toolkit and custom XSLT stylesheets to do the transform.

Those pieces are outside of my technical skill level and would require a lot of time and money to put together. Before going down that route, I am trying to learn what other people do once they've gotten to an XML source using Structured FrameMaker. Does everyone just generate webhelp and be happy with it? If so, are they using DITA open toolkit or are they using other tools? How do they solve the search problems associated with webhep?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I don't want to dig down a hole of custom development to design the perfect help pages before I know that the solution is not already out there.

Thanks,

Erin

som sort ov version control needed

Hi all - question from framer without a FDK, Framescript, plug-ins, etc experience.

My client asked me a Q if is possible to use the FM8s Filter by Attribute and Track Text Edits features to extract new structure/text changes added to a FM document. In other words, client wants to send only the changes between two document versions to a localization vendor.

I thought to use a version attribute to distinguish between newly added elements and existing elements. Here the Problem 1 came I need to update all ancestors tree up to the root element. Without this Attribute Filter will not do the work.

Problem 2 - when changes occur in an existing element here Track Changes together with updating of the version attribute should allow to filter out elements with text changes.. So I have to catch the Track Text event and use it for update the version.

I am looking if FrameSLT can do this job but it is much staff to learn in several days. Any suggestion how to do it? And may be some examples?

Thanks

How to round-trip a "suppress hyphenation symbol"?

$

Hi all,

I can't find any information in the ref or dev guides on how to map a "suppress hyphenation symbol" from Frame to XML.

Van -- are you reading this? I've seen your recent post that says to create an element representing it (actually you were talking specifically about nonbreaking hyphens and spaces but I think this would be similar) in the EDD, but I can't tell how to do that. It would be an element that contained a "suppress hyhenation symbol" itself -- created by doing: "Esc n s" in the actual document, but I"m not sure what type of element I should create, or how to do it. I get about this far:

Element (Container): SuppressHyphen
  General rule: <TEXT>
  Prefix rules
    In all contexts.
      Text range.

...then I can't tell how to actually insert the symbol.

Alternatively, perhaps I could do it in the read/write rules, but I don't see any Frame documentation that mentions how to map a suppress hyphen symbol. I don't know how Frame represents it internally -- as an entity?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Shelley Hoose

How do I specify file locations in a structure application?

$

I want to export a structured Frame file to XML, using a structure application that I create. I have a DTD, a read/write file, and a template file, all stored on a network drive. I would like to specify the locations of these files using the notation \\MyServer\folder\...\folder\name.dtd, etc to make the application independent of the drive mapping. I can do this for the read/write file and the template file, but FrameMaker complains when I specify the DTD file in the same way. If I change the path for the DTD file to be R:\...\folder\name.dtd, then FrameMaker does not complain about it but apparently sees the read/write and template files just fine.

Why is this? Am I doing something wrong in the path specification?

I am using FrameMaker 9.0.3 on Windows XP with all service packs.

Thanks,

Van

Best way to structure Cell contents

Hi All,

OK, my last question for the week, and if I can get my head around this, I'd say I had a productive week.

So, I am working on establishing a basic EDD to be used for making and converting some large documents, many which contain a plethora of tables.

Many of the tables are for stylized elements like notes, warnings, etc. Also, it is not unusual to have bulleted lists inside the tables.

I am wondering, do you think I should require that text inside table cells be wrapped in some sort of "paragraph" element? As opposed to allowing it to be wrapped directly in the cell as the default TEXT?

I'm sure it can be done either way, but wondering if there is a best practice on this. Seems like if it was in a general "paragraph" element, it would make it easier to drag stuff in and out of tables or from one table to another, etc. in structured view. Plus, I'm sure I'll need to wrap stuff as part of the conversion process. But is there a good reason to not do that...?

Thanks!

Darren

Can't save ]]> in document text to XML

$

Dear colleagues,

I am currently evaluating a Save-as-XML problem with FrameMaker 9.0p255. The content of the document shows some XML examples which contains CDATA sections, like

<environment> <var name="service"><![CDATA[Inhalt]]></var></environment>

Reminder: This is in the text of the FrameMaker document.

When I save as XML, the XML parser complains: »Error at line 140, char 77, Message: The sequence ']]>' is not allowed in character data«

When I open the XML file in a XML editor I see that all < are correctly escaped as < and all > are left as is. The built-in Xerxes parser also reports: »The character sequence "]]>" must not appear in content unless used to mark the end of a CDATA section.«

And the XML Recommendation says:

The right angle bracket (>) may be represented using the string " > ", and must, for compatibility, be escaped using either " > " or a character reference when it appears in the string "]]> " in content, when that string is not marking the end of a CDATA section.

It seems to me FrameMaker should either write all > as > to avoid the possibility that it might be used after ]].

Can you reproduce this issue (I can using the UserGuide structured application, by just putting ]]> in any element)?

Have you found a way to workaround this, maybe with a special R/W rule?

Thanks,

- Michael

How do I change rendering of wintitle element?

$

Hello,

I'm still quite new to DITA and unhappy about the way the wintitle element is rendered in FrameMaker 12. Unlike uicontrol, which comes out in bold, wintitle is completely undifferentiated from ordinary text.

Is there a straightforward way to change it to bold and perhaps a different font, so that the names of applications can be displayed differently?

I have no idea how to edit an EDD or even find the EDD that is controlling this (if indeed that is how character styles are controlled in DITA fm).

Thanks for any help,

Can open Topics by drag & drop, but not by double-clicking in the DITA map

$

0

Hi,

evidently I made an error somewhere in my structure app, the result is that I cannot open DITA topics by double clicking them in the DITA map anymore (Framemaker does simpy nothing). I can, however, open them by dragging the xml files onto the Framemaker window. If I use the standard DITA 1.2 application everything works fine so I guess the problem is in my mapping.

Here is what I tried to achieve:

  • We need certain variations of the normal 'topic' type topic. The DTD should be identical, however different structures should be auto-inserted when creating a topic and the topic should have certain attribute values predefined.
  • The idea is that the author can select one of these topic types when creating a topic, but when opening an existing topic simply edit it with the standard topic temple.

Here is what I did:

  1. I duplicated the topic.template.fm, renaming it say "topic_a.template.fm", "topic_b.template.fm" etc. (just an example).
  2. I made adjustments to the EDD of these templates, changing the auto-insertions and the default values of some attributes.
  3. In the structapps.fm file I added XML applications for these new topic types, mapping each application to one of the new templates, but to the original topic DTD and r/w rules. E.g. the application "DITA_1.2_topic_a" is mapped to the "topic_a.template.fm" template, and to the original "topic.dtd" and "topic.rules.txt" files.
  4. In Framemaker I then created corresponding application mappings in the DITA options. E.g. the topic type "A" (which defines the visible text in the "New topic" menu) is maped to the XML application "DITA_1.2_topic_a".

The result:

  • It works as intended in every way when creating topics. The topics are saved with the standard doctype 'topic'. However for when I try to open topics from the DTD by double-clicking then nothing happens. Opening topics by drag & drop works fine though and they are opened with the normal (general) "topic.template.fm" template as desired.

Any ideas? Was this confusing or am I completely off somewhere?

Has anyone had trouble with Fm12 menubar and toolbar issues lately?

I'm running Win 8.1 on vmware Fusion, and noticed when I am in structured Fm, the icons and controls at the top of the page appear to be corrupted.

Hi,

Still finding my way around Framemaker! I'm trying to save as a pdf but exclude some XML elements

I have used DITA for the files (chapters) but seem to have ended up with a framemaker TOC and book format (.fm), but if that will work, that's k for now.

BUT I have cone to save as PDF, then under tags excluded 'note' and 'related links' but they still appear in the pdf output.

Can anyone give me some advice?

Many thanks
