Columns in Framemaker
I have read the message on how to set up columns in the master pages of a document and I did this, but how to I make them read down the column and then start at the top of the next and so on. When I hit enter my cursor goes across to the next column.
S1000D Application Pack and graphics
Hi,
I am using the S1000D Application Pack to make data modules according to S1000D221. In one project I have a lot of tif-files (TIF, CCITTgr 4) to be inserted in the data modules (descriptive and procedural). When opening the XML-files in FrameMaker the application changes the size of the graphic files. When inserting CGM this never occurs. The problem is related to TIF only. If anyone has the explanation to why I would be grateful.

FM8 and DITA: attribute "rotate" in table entries
Hi there,
I tried to add the attribute "rotate" for table entries. The Developer's guide and the additional reference guide were a good help here. Everything you need for your dtd and read/write rules is listed there.
<!ATTLIST entry ... rotate %yesorno; #IMPLIED ... >
element "entry" { ... attribute "rotate" is fm property rotate; ... }
In the EDD, the attribute has not to be added, I think.
But anyway: I have added this attribute to some table entries. And now I always get the error message that the attribute 'rotate' was not declared for the element 'entry', when I open the xml-file in FrameMaker.
Does anyone know, what else I have to do?
Thanks in advance,
Anna
Automatically insert element tag around 'inline' cross-references
Hi all,
When you have a cross reference that was created around, say, just a chunk of text, Framemaker will not preserve any sort of cross-reference information on export to XML, beyond just making sure the text associated with the cross reference is exported correctly.
As it states in the structured application developer manual:
Whether or not the cross-reference element has an IDREF attribute, if the source of the cross-
reference is not an element, then FrameMaker exports the cross-reference element as text. That
is, the fact that an element was present in the FrameMaker document is lost; instead, the text
content provided by the cross-reference format appears in the markup document.
I was trying to figure out a way to use read/write rules to automatically generate a tag of some sort around such inline cross-references. I have an element for cross references in my DTD named Xref, so I tried this:
element "Xref" {
is fm element "Xref";
}
Unfortunately, this didn't do anything. This is my first day using Framemaker, so I'll readily admit I may be a little bit lost.
Does any one have any suggestions as to how I can preserve cross-reference information, on export to XML? I want to create an XML toolchain that reads in this XML; and currently it's not really possible to pick up cross-references.

Seth
XML import deletes whitespace after xref element
Hi,
FM10 not patched, WinXP SP3
I've bumped into a very serious problem that I am able to replicate, but not solve. When I import (custom) XML, any whitespace following <xref> elements is deleted. I don't know if it exclusive to crossreference elements or any no-content elements... but for sure it is happening with xrefs.
Here is a zip with sample files with which I am able to replicate this. The XML file has two <xref>s separated by "and". When you import the XML (using the DTD, rules, and template provided), the whitespace before the "and" is deleted.
http://www.weststreetconsulting.com/downloads/test.zip
I disabled all my personal plugins and all DITA plugins that I could find, same thing.
I don't know if anyone has the time to look at this, but I'd be very appreciative if anyone could confirm the problem. This has caused a real mess in my source files that I can go fix using non-breaking spaces, but this is really a pain and very much suboptimal.
Thanks,
Russ
How can I unwrap multiple elements in one go in Framemaker 10?
Hi guys,
Is there anyway I can unwrapp multiple elements in one go using Adobe Framemaker 10?
I wrap all changes I make to a doucment in a "Change" element and then unwrap it before I start a new update. I currently do this using the following steps:
- Go to Edit > Find/Change… or press Ctrl+F to bring up the Find/Change dialogue box.
- Change the Find option to “Element”; this will bring up a Find Element dialogue box.
- Type “Change” in the Element Tag option and select Set and the user will be returned to the Find/Change dialogue box.
- Select Find ensuring Book is checked in the Look in: section.
- The Find/Change dialogue box, set up as mention above, will take the user to all the “Change” elements in the document.
- Once each change element is found they will be highlighted in the Structure View tree.
- Each element will need to be unwrapped. This can be done by right clicking the highlighted element and selecting Unwrap.
It works but just seems to take a long time and I was wondering if there is a quicker way to uwrap all the "change" elements in one go.
Thanks in advance.
Rgds

ATA iSpec 2200 CMM book validation
Hi all,
I am a technical writer and I am new to structured authoring.
I have a structured CMM for a component with ATA number 11-22-33 (example). Taking Source files of this CMM, i have to create a new CMM whose ATA number is 11-22-34. Contents of both CMMs are similar except some minor changes.
I have made all the required changes and now I am facing a problem with MTOSS Numbering.
I have to update ATA Number as 11-22-34 for TASK and Subtask level, but there is no Element Attributes for chapno, subno, secno. for TASK and Subtask
I have updated Book level attributes as chapno=11, subno=22, secno=34, but it is not reflecting throughout CMM pageblocks.
How can I change the attributes as chapno=11, subno=22, secno=34 for TASK and Subtask.
Please help me in this..
XML export of marker-based xrefs?
Colleagues,
I'm pulling my hair out a bit over issues with external cross-references in an unstructured>structured conversion. (FrameMaker 11, custom DTD).
First, I've not found a way to automatically convert _external_ cross-references from marker-based to element-based. This is a historical issue, but I thought I would raise it in case any new solutions or approaches have appeared.
If FrameMaker won't convert marker-based external cross-references, I would prefer to do this clean-up in XML. But...FrameMaker unwraps these (marker-based, unresolved) cross-reference elements on save to XML. (FM retains the _text_ of the cross-reference, but removes the cross-reference element).
Is there any way to prevent this unwrapping? The presence of an empty cross-reference element is more important to me than the cross-reference text.

Special Char not Translating into Horizontal Tab in Structured FM 11
In the office where I work, we are upgrading from Structured FrameMaker 8 in Win XP to Structured FrameMaker 11 in Win 7. Part of the work that I do involves importing xml feeds into Structured FrameMaker templates using an automated process. As I am testing the importing into FM 11 I am noticing that the special character code used for a horizontal tab - - is not translating into a tab after the xml feed has been imported into the FM 11 template. It does translate into a horizontal tab when imported into FM 8. What special character code should be used for horizontal tabs in FM11?

Arbortext(XML) import to Framemaker Error
I am trying to import XML files from Arbortext editor off of Documentum and I can not get them to import into FrameMaker without an "error in processing external entity reference." I am trying to get the files into FrameMaker so I can create an EDD using the DTD from XML file. Is there anyway to import the file or atleast save the DTD in arbortext to use in framemaker?
re: Linking to an XSL/FOS stylesheet!
Hi Everyone!
I am working in structured framemaker....on developing an update manual based on a mil-std dtd 40051c. I have the dtd as well as an official FOSI (stylesheet) file and need a bit of help.
Here is a recap of what I have done thus far:
- Create an EDD based off the MIL-STD DTD file
- Create a DTD based on my EDD
- Create new file and imported element definitions, followed by building the top-level tree structure for the entire manual
- I have put the FOS, as well as an XSL (I simply converted the FOS file) into my structapps directory
My question is this:
Seeing as I have the entire tree structure built already, I could potentially go through each element and add my content. The problem however is that in Framemaker I cannot see the styles of each element in the document itself. I have done many tests and my modifacations to structapps have not worked. I also know that I am building the document correctly because after finishing a test section I save my framemaker file to an XML file and open it up in Arbortext. At that point I can associate it to the stylesheet and it looks perfect. This is an extremely tedious process though and I would really love it if we could somehow view the correct styles as we inputted text in Framemaker. (We only have one copy of Arbortext as well so there is no way I can update all of these documents on my own)
I hope I have explained this well - so if anyone can please give me information on correctly linking an fos/xsl stylesheet within Framemaker it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much
to add pdf file as hypertext in FrameMaker file
I add a hypertext in a FrameMaker file using "message openfile reference.pdf" and save the file as pdf. However on click of the hypertext the launch file window is not popping up. The launch window is opening if I change the hypertext to "message openfile reference".
Is there any specific command to launch pdf files from pdf ( after saving the FrameMaker file as pdf) ?
How to insert special character in sgm file and interprete it without isoents while opening in FM9.0
I have an sgm file which contains special characters in different languages.
<!DOCTYPE MANUAL PUBLIC "-//SWE-XXX//DTD XXX MANUAL-DTD 2.0//EN">
<MANUAL LANG="CS">
<TITEL>
Polish characters: óê¿ñæÑÆÊ¥Ó£
Czech characters: éìóïáøèíùòú&Og rave;ÌÉÓÚÙÈØÍÁÏ aacute: á</TITEL>
</MANUAL>
Is there any way to insert special character directly in sgm file, so that it won't have to be interpreted by isoents mapping rules?
isoent.rwr interpretes oacute as:
entity "oacute" is fm char 0x00F3;
But I would like to use 0x00F3 directly in fm file, so that if any additional character is needed - I won't have to update isoent files
I've tested already:
ó
&x00F3;
&0x00F3;
but with no luck
Is there anyone who could help me with it?
I will really appreciate your help

Carriage Return in Autonumber Format?
Hello,
I've set up my Structured EDD with some Headings that have Autonumbering. I'm wondering if there is any way to put a return between the number and the text?
In other words, can I make this:
Chapter 2: This is the Chapter Title
look like this:
Chapter 2:
This is the Chapter Title
As a secondary question, in my search for the answer to this question, I discovered the <r>. <r+>, <R>, etc. "building blocks". I can't find them mentioned anywhere in the user manual or developing structured application manual. Can anyone tell me exactly what their function is?
Thanks!

how to customize CHM and PDF output
I can easily generate CHM and PDF using the Generate Output option offered by DITA-FMx, but the output is just standard and I would like to customize it according to the company style. Which files should I work on to modify fonts, colours, indentation, etc, both for CHM and PDF?
