Hi, we are now using TortoiseSVN, which is free. I wonder if there is any better solutions? I checked FM Guide, there are three: Adobe Eexperience Manager, EMC Documentum, MS SharePoint. What is your reccommendation? BTW, is AEM free?

Publishing DITA content through DITA-OT or Save as PDF?

Hi Frame users and DITA enthusiasts

I would like to ask for your opinions when publishing DITA content to PDF, either with DITA-OT or Adobe PDF.

This is my first DITA Project and I been testing and playing around with both options but feeling stuck as I can't decide which option to go with.

Both the DITA-OT or Save as PDF will require some modifications, so I rather do things the hard way, then having to go back and create a new publishing template later.

Thanks and best regards

Hi,

Still finding my way around Framemaker! I'm trying to save as a pdf but exclude some XML elements

I have used DITA for the files (chapters) but seem to have ended up with a framemaker TOC and book format (.fm), but if that will work, that's k for now.

BUT I have cone to save as PDF, then under tags excluded 'note' and 'related links' but they still appear in the pdf output.

Can anyone give me some advice?

Many thanks

OTF Fonts Thai

Hello,

we are working with structured FM 8 and do translate in pretty much all languages except for Arabic. So far, there were no complaints for the Asian languages. But now, we receive the feedback that the characters for Thai (Arial Unicode) are correct but that there are spaces between some characters making it difficult to read the text. We have done various tests and recognized that all True-Type fonts are causing these problems. Now, I installed an OTF-Font for Thai and the problems stay the same. Therefor, my question if the Thai font is upported at all?

Thank you very much in advance,

error msg: element boundaries are turned on, but they're not

I'm using FM 8 in Tech Comm Suite 1 on Windows XP.

When I am PDFing my book file, I usually get the message that the element boundaries are turned on in one or more of my book files; however, none of the book files have any boundaries turned on.  How do I get rid of this message?

Thanks.

FrameMaker Server - just a dream?

I currently use FM8 for books. Our company wants me to develop a solution that I think FM can meet but I am not familiar with XML capacities of FM Server.

If I get the FM Server upgrade, can I complete these tasks?:

1) Central, web accessible location for all pdfs.
2) Role-based editing on demand (softwaer developers that need to update the docs periodically) through some web-based interface.
3) Role-based viewing of pdfs (user groups can only view pdfs applied to their group)
4) Creation of an TOC that will automatically update when documents are edited.

This is a theory question. Is it possible? Is FM8 Server using XML enough to do this? Do I need to hire programmers to develop an interface for document editors? What kind (C, Java, etc).

Requesting feedback or some ideas.

Can't Save As PDF

I am working with DITA files in Frame 8, and am unable to save a generated Frame file as a PDF. I keep getting these errors:

  • "To execute "Save as PDF" command you must have Acrobat Distiller version 5.05 or higher installed."
  • "To execute "Save as PDF" command you must have PDF Job Options defined.

I have Acrobat Distiller 8 installed, so I don't know why I'm getting the first error. I opened Distiller, and still got the error.

Also, I did try to set job options using Format> Document> PDF Setup. On the PDF Setup dialog box, the only job option in the PDF Job Options drop-down list was High Quality Print. When I clicked Set, I got a message stating that "The selected PDF Job Option does not existing in the current installation. Either create this Job Option or select an available Job Option."

How do you create a valid job option? How do you get it to show up in the drop-down list? I looked at the Adobe PDF properties in Print Setup, and the Default Settings show several job options including the High Quality Print option.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

NATEC Pubs and Modular DTDs

Has anyone had experience with NATEC pubs in FM?
I have FM 7.2 in Windows.
To summarize how they should be asembled:
All versions of the MIL-STD-3001 DTDs are organized as modules, with each
module (collection of Work Packages) and TM front matter represented as a separate module (DTD). Once all pieces of a TM are created, they may be assembled together using the Assembly DTD (milstd1.dtd).

I am creating the Front Matter with one DTD(milstd1.dtd) and the body with another DTD(maintim.dtd). I have both DOCTYPES listed in my application file with one application name. But I don't know how they are to be combined to create the whole pub. How does one bring in a whole FM document into another? Can't find anything about this in the FM Developer's Guide.

I'm trying to open an .sgm file in Structured FrameMaker 7.2 and I keep getting errors and believe my setting are incorrect.  This is what happens:

  1. Open file.
  2. Prompt:  "Use Structured Application."  I choose "<No Application>"
  3. Error:  "SGML Parser Messages (Document Prolog)"

                    C:\Documents and Settings\............filename.sgm; line 1

Could not find external document type VIB (-//Company Name//DTD VIB//EN).

I really don't know where to go with this, so any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Exporting Paragraph Catalog to EDD

$

Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any help.

I'm currently working on importing XML into Framemaker. I'm fairly new to Framemaker but after reading the technical paper on XSLT and structured devleopment I think I've got my mind around it.

So my thought is take our complex xml and on import translate it with an XSLT to basically a paragraph/character style structure that I then "apply" an EDD with formatting rules to. I've worked through some examples and this doesn't seem to be a problem.

My problem arrises that these documents used to be edited in Framemaker I have a huge paragraph catalog. Is there a way to export these to an EDD so when I import the XML I can convert the elements to the same names as the paragraph/character style? Am I missing an easier way of doing this?

ATA iSPEC Cross Reference Elements

How do I use pre-defined cross reference elements within FM? The ATA iSPEC 2200 ACMM DTD uses refint, refext, grphcref and others to cross reference internal and external content. The only element I've been able to use in FM is the default CROSSREF. How do I configure FM to use the reference elements provided by the iSPEC DTD/EDD?

Managing EDD, DTD, and templates in Framemaker 11 and DITA 1.2

$

I'm in the process of upgrading from FM9 with DITA to Framemaker 11 with DITA 1.2 I'm using the ditabase template, EDD, and DTD. I've made some paragraph format changes in the template and will need to make changes to the EDD as well. Once all the changes are made, I will need to distribute the changes to other writers. I'm wondering what is the best way to go about making the changes so the distribution process is as simple as possible?

In FM 9, the EDD was a single file so we only had to update 2 files (the template and the EDD). In FM11 with DITA 1.2, there are multiple EDDmod files. Do I need to distribute all of these files to apply the changes?

Also, I haven't actually been able to apply the changes to the EDD to my documents and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. This is what I did to change the prefix text applied to the postreq element:

1. Open the task.eddmod.fm file. Find the postreq element and change the prefix text. (Note that this is the only change I made to the document) Save the document.

2. Open the ditabase.edd.fm file. Find the text inset to the task.edd,mod. fm file. Update the text inset. Save the document.

3. Open the dtiabase.template.fm file. Import the Element Definitions from ditabase.edd.fm file.

Expected results: the element definitions are imported with no errors.

Actual result: I get the following error messages:

Format rule specification (| bookmeta) is invalid.

Elements that are defined but not referenced.

steps-informal

Elements that re reference but not defined.

bookmeta

topicmeta

I didn't make any changes to these elements so I don't understand why they are now invalid. Did I miss a step or do something incorrectly that would affect these elements?

Note that I'm making the changes to the original documents that are referenced in the structured document, the template, and so on. I have saved backups of all the original files before I make changes to them.

Thanks for you help,

Font substitution When converting FM11 file to PDF

$

I am working in a FM11 – Win 7 environment. We upgraded 2 font families recently:
Imago Book upgraded to Imago BQ
Bembo upgraded to Bembo Std

I am attempting to save a FrameMaker 11 file as a pdf. When I attempt to do this, the pdf is not embedding the Imago BQ Bold font. It is substituting it with Imago BQ BoldItalic. I am pdfing a number of FM11 files that have been formatted in different templates. I am not experiencing this problem with these FM11 files. It is only occurring with a set of FM11 files formatted in one template.

I can’t figure out why this font substitution is occurring. Has anyone encountered this issue ? How do I resolve it?

I am using Adobe Acrobat X Pro.

Thanks,
Brenda

FrameMaker 12 Publish Crash

$

Using Framemaker 12.0.1.331 all publish operations crash if the document contains a UserString of 1 or more characters in a table element.  We use UserStrings in this way to hold metadata about tables such as database keys and effective dates.

The Mif looks like this:  [We would normally have an xml fragment here but this is enough to produce a crash]

<Tbl

  <TblID 10>

<UserString `A'>

  <TblTag `Format A'>

  <TblFormat

Incidently a zero length UserString doesn't result in a crash.

Looks like a bug to me.

Display a line (via image frame) below suffix

$

Hi all,

currently I am trying to format the DITA <lq> element (long quote) to display a line above and below its content. For the line below I have tried to use a suffix rule in the EDD. I can assign any text and character formatting below the long quote without problems, but Framemaker ignores any imaged frames that I define there.

The EDD does not allow the definition of a frame directly in the suffix rule, so I am using a format change list.

This is the suffix rule in the <lq> element. It refers to the format chanhe list "line_below" (the EDD language is German):

suffix01 - Kopie.PNG

This is the corresponding format change list that defines a frame below.

suffix02.PNG

If I define any other formatting in the format change list such as red text color there are no problems at all, only the image frames are ignored.

Does anybody have an idea how to solve this?

Hi everyone

I was very sorry to see a recent post on the dita-users list saying that Jeremy has died. We've used Mif2Go extensively and found Jeremy incredibly helpful. The FM community won't be the same without him.
