Undo Command not working in FrameMaker 10 - how do I enable it?

$

The Undo command and Redo command are not working in the FrameMaker 10 book I am working on.

I am running FrameMaker 10 on Windows 7. I'm working on a Structured DITA FM document.

Undo works in my other FM books.

How do I turn it back on?

Thank you

Jenn

How can you set the background color of a table cell?

Unstructured FrameMaker supports applying a background color to a table cell, so why doesn't a FrameMaker EDD support the CSS property background-color? (Structured Application Developer Reference, p. 185).

It looks like Structured FrameMaker only supports text background color but not cell background color. Is this correct, or am I missing something? How can I color-code table cells for semantic purposes?

FrameMaker 11 won't start up

I'm running FrameMaker 11 on Windows 7. I just changed the settings from unstructured to structured Frame and restarted my computer. Now FrameMaker comes up for a few seconds and goes away. Is there something I can do to get FrameMaker to launch?

XRef idref attribute not recognized upon opening of XML file

***I suspect this might be an XSL-related solution***

I've inherited a client's xml structapp that goes out to XML quite nicely, but doesn't read in the requisite idref upon opening in FM11.

The read/write rules are fairly straightforward:

element "xref"

{

  is fm cross-reference element "XRef";

  attribute "xrefstyle" is fm property cross-reference format;

  attribute "linkend"           is fm property cross-reference id;

}

However, the linkend attribute is not populated upon opening, nor is the value (which is present in the XML file) passed as the cross-ref id into FM.

Anyone have a solution?

Could this be a result of XSL parsing, and might the XSL be dropping the attribute upon import prior to application of the RWR? I haven't dug into the import XSL yet, but suspect that's where I need to go.

FrameMaker 10 Crashes when updating EDD references

$

When I attempt to update the commonElements.eddmod.fm section references in the topic.eddmod.fm, and then attempt to save the file, FrameMaker 10 crashes with the following errors:

  • 6385224
  • 6372417
  • 6385885

I thought there was something wrong with the changes I made to the commonElements edd, but it did the same thing when I replaced the modified file with the original commonElements that was installed with Frame10, it did the same thing. I am on version 10.0.2.419. I was able to successfully update the reference before, and I believe I installed an automatic update for Tech Comm Suite 3 and this was what is now "different". I tried to look at the log file but it didn't tell me anything useful.

Has anyone else run into this?

Publishing DITA content through DITA-OT or Save as PDF?

Hi Frame users and DITA enthusiasts

I would like to ask for your opinions when publishing DITA content to PDF, either with DITA-OT or Adobe PDF.

This is my first DITA Project and I been testing and playing around with both options but feeling stuck as I can't decide which option to go with.

Both the DITA-OT or Save as PDF will require some modifications, so I rather do things the hard way, then having to go back and create a new publishing template later.

Thanks and best regards

FrameMaker SDK Question: How to read an XML file

$

Hi,

I am using FDK 12.0 on Windows (using Visual Studio 2012) to make some changes in a FrameMaker document programmatically. I have never used this or any other Adobe API before and am somewhat struggling with the concepts. Primarily I am using the sample programs, coming along with the FDK to guide me.

Now, I want to open and parse an XML file, whose content I will use later to manipulate the texts in a FrameMaker document. In .NET framework there are several classes (XMLReader, XMLTextReader etc.) to read and parse XML files easily. However, it seems I cannot use these Common Language Runtime classes because, apparently, a FDK plug-in needs to be a) C program and b) should not use CLR. In view that, can anyone please indicate if there are any suitable set of functions in FDK itself for parsing an XML file. Otherwise, is there any pure C based XML parser I can use? Some actual sample will be very helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Joydeep

Unable to convert a structure FM (11) file to RTF

When converting a structured FM 11 file to RTF, FM freezes for a while, and when it's working again, the output is either a corrupted .rtf file, or FM crashes. The file we are trying to convert is over 200 pages long and has several images linked.

Is there a way to convert the FM file to RTF and maintain some formatting? We have tried saving the file by extracting it from the PDF, but the output does not have any formatting to it.

FrameMaker 7.0 - Is there any easy way disconnect multiple frames? I have MANY pages that I have changed the page size. If I try Format >. customize layout > either disconnect previous or disconnect both - neither work.

Best practices: formatting inside or outside EDDs ?

Hello all,

A discussion started elsewhere on whether or not formatting should be done inside the EDD. I think that discussion should be held here, as there will be more people who have experience with this on this forum than on the other non-public discussion site. Of course most of the participants in the discussion on the closed forum are on this forum as, well, so we can maybe continue our discussion with a larger group.

On this particular topic, there seem to be two completely opposite views, and I would like to hear from people on this forum what they feel about this.

On one side are those who state that formatting should be done completely in the EDD, as this takes the ability to mess up the formatting away from authors - who should not have any control over formatting as they should just deliver content. If formatting is put in their hands the compatibility with existing standards or earlier revision processes would be breached. One message mentioned an 'enforcable controllable environment' as the goal of working with structured Frame in the first place - if I am getting that point correctly (and of not, there will be reactions from the ones on this forum who belong to that camp).

The other side (which, according to the impression given on the non-public site, is a rare minitory viewpoint) is taking ALL formatting out of the EDD and allowing clients to do their own paragraph and character designer based formatting without having to edit the EDD. In this case, the client is not dependent on the person who created the EDD to change the font, text alignment, hyphenation etc. The EDD assigns paragraph format tags and the client can - if they want to - change those paragraph formats to suit their needs. I am a strong advocate of this position and have been using this strategy for my clients with a lot of success.

I do want to answer to the comments about control, just to clarify that the choice between formatting inside or outside the EDD is not the same as a choice between keeping full control or having no control whatsoever. Control or no control is another matter, in my opinion. I can easily see methods to make the paragraph and character designer unavailable in Frame for those who have no authority to make any changes to the company's style sheerts. This would leave those who are in control of the styling the option to define or redefine paragraph and character styles without having to bring in the expensive consultant who created the EDD for them. Changes to the EDD would for example be required to support another font for a Bulgarian translation.

Frankly, I do not want to make my clients dependent on my services just to change the font to Arial CYR if they happen to sell a machine to Bulgaria. Also, I don't want to build full support for all the formatting quirks my customers might ever need into an EDD that will become an almost unmanageable beast (and require expensive consultants to make any changes that do not bring the system to a screaching halt). My customers can create different templates, using different sets of fonts, paragraph formats, character formats and table formats, without ever changing the underlying structure that is defined by the EDD. It is their responsibility to define the look and feel of their documents, and it is mine to make sure the structure is correct. They pay me to build a structured authoring system, not to define their style guide. And if they do want me to create their style guide as well, I will create a template that contains all the required paragraph, character and table formats separate from the EDD. To ensure that their authors cannot mess around with the formatting I will even give them a little script that makes the designer pods go away and stay away. Plenty control, but not at the cost of putting the formatting in the EDD - where I do not think it belongs in the first place.

OK - that was my first round. Let's hear it from the others on this forum...

Kind regards from drizzly Amsterdam

How do I set column widths in read/write rules?

$

Hello structure experts,

I am reading a set of DITA files into a specific FM template format, and there is one detail I cannot get to work properly. It should be possible to define column widths in a table, even if the DITA file does not include that information. But the Structure Application Developer Reference does not give the information on which string to pass to the column widths fm property. Does anyone out there have experience in doing this ?

Thanks

Cross reference issues in FrameMaker 11 DITA

$

I'm trying to upgrade from FrameMaker 9 to FrameMaker 11. My files are set up using structured FrameMaker and DITA. The ditamap is comprised of both FM files and XML files. I'm attempting to use the ditabase template and DTD and DITA 1.2.

When I open my XML files in Framemaker 11, any cross references to other chapters in the book and gone. The fm-xref tag that is there is empty. I know there are some changes to cross references between DITA 1.1 and DITA 1.2, but I'm wondering if there is a way to retain the cross references when I open the file in FM11 even if the cross reference does actually link to the referenced location. Or do I have to manually go through my document and re-enter all the cross references?

I'm also having trouble getting the cross references to use the correct font format. After searching through all the various edd files that are referenced, I found the section that applies to cross references and it seems to indicate that the font format is set in the cross reference format in FrameMaker, but I can't figure out how to change the cross reference format.

Then instructions in the Framemaker help say:

  1. Choose Special > cross-reference.
  2. Click Edit Format.
  3. ....

But I can't find anything that says "Edit Format".

Thanks for the help,

Sharon

I've been tasked to export an SGML file from a structure FrameMaker 11 file.  The documentation calls for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, but I've got Microsoft Visual Studio 2012.  Is 2012 compatible?

And so, when and how does my Data module get validated against the mentioned rule? Whenever i try to validate my Data module, it turns out as valid even though my data module has //description/para/emphasis element in it. Please let me know what should i be doing in order to catch my rule?

Conversion table-nesting elements

Hi,

I am new to structured FM and was trying to migrate a few unstructured FM documents to structured using the "conversion table". After generating the conversion table, I am not able to create a proper heirarchy (nesting) of the elements.

Could any one help me with the basics of 'element nesting'. I read the documentation provided by Adobe and tried to do it, but without much success.

The generated conversion table is given below.

Display a line (via image frame) below suffix

$

Hi all,

currently I am trying to format the DITA <lq> element (long quote) to display a line above and below its content. For the line below I have tried to use a suffix rule in the EDD. I can assign any text and character formatting below the long quote without problems, but Framemaker ignores any imaged frames that I define there.

The EDD does not allow the definition of a frame directly in the suffix rule, so I am using a format change list.

This is the suffix rule in the <lq> element. It refers to the format chanhe list "line_below" (the EDD language is German):

suffix01 - Kopie.PNG

This is the corresponding format change list that defines a frame below.

suffix02.PNG

If I define any other formatting in the format change list such as red text color there are no problems at all, only the image frames are ignored.

Does anybody have an idea how to solve this?

Robert

How can I suppress processing instructions?

I am writing a structured FM file to XML and then processing it into HTML using XSLT. Writing the file to XML works OK but I cannot get rid of the PIs that FrameMaker puts in the text for all kinds of things (such as conditional text). I have created elements for all the markers I need and want to get rid of any remaining PIs. Is there a way to tell FM about this in the read-write rules?

Thanks for pointing me to the useful source of information about this. I have spent a couple of hours checking the structure application guides but the info remains too cryptic to make it work.

Kind regards

Transfer attribute values to Entities in rw-rules for table creation

$

Hello,

I try to fight my way through the xml Structured FM jungle.To this I read various documents (e.g. STRUCTURE APPLICATION DEVELOPER REFERENCE).At the moment my main goal is to find out what works and how to do it best.Therefore I will probably here in the forum to try one or the other question to be answered.

I want to create a message tree in xml and publish via FM PDF.Because I want to filter the messages, I have declared various descriptive numbers of the message as an attribute.

As far as I understand, attributes are the only way in FM to do some filtering of the content which will appear in the document (without a CMS). If I am wrong, please correct me.

XML-Example:

<MESSAGE_TREE>

    <MESSAGE Group="FF03" Message_No="1" Status_No="1">

        <Message_Text>Message Example 1</Message_Text>

        <Status_Text>Message 1</Status_Text>

    </MESSAGE>

    <MESSAGE Group="FF04" Message_No="1" Status_No="1">

        <Message_Text>Message Example 2</Message_Text>

        <Status_Text>Message 2</Status_Text>

    </MESSAGE>

</MESSAGE_TREE>

In the FM PDF output the attributes values should appear in a table cell. They should not only be used for the filtering.

If I understand correctly, I always have to go for the creation of tables the detour via rw-rules. Again if I am wrong, please correct me.

In the rw-rules I can transform entities in other FM entities. But I can apparently not transfer attributes in FM entities.

Please can anyone give me an idea how I can manage this?

Thanks a lot.

DITA Open Toolkit (DITA-OT) nothing happens when building output

$

Hi

I'm trying to generate PDF2/XHTML using the DITA Open Toolkit with FrameMaker 12 but nothing happens when building the output.

I can see the command line start but is then immediately shutdown, and there is nothing generated in the output folder.

I have installed the Java JDK and set the Java_Home variable (before that the output options box didn't open).

Do anyone have a glue what is wrong?
