I am a relative newcomer and am not sure if this question belongs here.  If not, please let me know.

I am about to upgrade to Windows 8.1 (won't go into why) and of course I need to make sure FrameMaker 11 works there.  Does it?

Thanks ALOT in advance.

No hierarchy structure in PDF output from ditamap

$

I am trying to publish a ditamap to pdf with FM11. Adobe seems to recommend to save as a FM book with components and then to PDF. Then the hierarchy was lost in the PDF even though it looks very good in the FM book structure.

Almost all topics are rendered as a  chapter;

the exception is when the chapter has a href to a dita file;

all sections are rendered as a section no matter where this section belong to and which layer its parent topic is on;

all the topic title use title.0 para tag, and sections use title.1 para tag, so they are all included in the TOC as chapters and sections, no matter which layer they are on in the ditamap;

the numbering of chapter/section are in a mess.

I have looked into the ditafm-output.ini and didn't find useful settings. Any suggestions or clue? or FrameMaker is only not capable for these issues? or can only publish a flat topic PDF?

Thanks!

Feather spacing in headings to base align columns/pages

$

Hi,

Feather space in Headings is the important requirement in typesetting. For example, every heading requires "x" amount of above space, and "y" amount of below space. This is being configured in the Paragraph style designer. Is there any option to provide how much these "x" and "y" values can be negotiated (increase or decrease) in order to base align the column/pages. This feathering option is available in both 3B2 and LaTeX to configure. Unfortunately, this option is not available in InDesign too but we could make a script to achieve but this is unlikely. Are there any feature in FrameMaker to handle this feathering option?

Thanks in advance,

Fm 12 - How can I include a graphic in an XML document that will be zoomable when converted to HTML5?

I'd like to inc;lude grahics in my help files when authoring them in xml and converting them to Responsive HTML5 web documents.  I'm not sure of the proper way to inc;lude javascript scripts into the XML documents that could be used to make the images zoomable and panable.  Codeblock elements don't seem to work - all that happens is the text of the script is displayed in a font different from the font I'm using for the Help text. Maybe I'm using the wrong elements?  I'm using Framemaker 12. Any ideas here would be greatly appreciated.

Here is where my problem occurs: (FM Structured open) File menu > Print Book >  PDF setup > Bookmark > Include Elements. Here inside the Include Elements column, how can I move all the element to Don't Include area? Now I can only move one by one but there are hundreds of elements. However I didn't find a Move All button. It's so strange. Can anyone help?

Quick way to validate DITA specializations

$

Hi guys,

is there any way to quickly validate a DITA specialization against standard DITA resulting in a list of what had been specialized?

I'm necromancing a long dead legacy document here, that had been written in some DITA specialization.

Problem is, nobody remembers about there wheres' and whats' of the document (my boss even barely remembered that there had been "something").

For now I managed to save it as XML, but the error logs went crazy while doing so

The only person who might have had an idea about the case left the company years ago, too.

The issue at hand is, that the document needs to be imported into some CMS with DITA import filters - and I need to know at least where problems may occur.

As I have literally no time and budget for this, I need some quick and dirty solution

Maybe you guys have some bright idea.

Hello,

I dont want to allocate all DITA elements in FrameMaker. The technical writer should not be able to use the element shortdesc. But I
dont want to specialize DITA and I dont want to delete the element.
I know, that I can change the file "rule" with the command "element x drop", but it doesnt work.

With kind regards,

MIL-STD 40051C - where to begin

$

Hi everyone...I am fairly new to structured framemaker and spent the last week reading every piece of information I could on the subject.

I've been given the task here at work of taking some unstructured framemaker documents and structure them using MIL-STD 40051C as a guide.

If someone could please give me some help on this....I don't even know where to begin. Information overload. I have a DTD provided to me, as well as a folder containing XSL stylesheets for what seems like nearly every tag and a boilerplate folder.

Some of the links for my source material can be found here:

https://pubsweb.redstone.army.mil/DTD-FOSI/40051C-AMCOM.html

http://www.asrl.com/tmconstr.htm

So far I have imported the DTD to framemaker and saved as an EDD. Everything seems to be fine there. As far as the next step, I really have no idea.

I presume that if I wanted to build, lets say, a cover page...I would refer to the standard and build a page using the tags described.

I have given this a try and all I get is a tree structure with no formatting. How am I supposed to link to a stylesheet in Framemaker? What's more...there are about 50 styles in the folder I was provided so how do I know which one I am supposed to refer to?

Basically this is a huge scope of an effort that I am just getting my feet wet in, so if someone who is familiar can PLEASE give me some initial guidance it would be sincerely appreciated. I can't even find any documentation for this stuff on the web so this is my only hope.

Thanks very much

What to Do Now That I've Got Structured Content?

$

Hello FrameMaker Gurus.

I've been working as a lone writer for a software company for many years. We have a 1300 page product manual that was originally authored in unstructured FrameMaker. We then use WebWorks to generate "Webhelp" that is both hosted online publically and installable with the software. You can see it here:

http://www.tableausoftware.com/currentonlinehelp

In preparation for multiple writers as well as multiple products, I have since converted the content to structured XML using the DITA DTD. I still author in Structured FrameMaker working from the XML files. I am now considering my options for how to generate the final output. My problem with webhelp templates is that the output is a framed help system connected by javascript links. That format makes it difficult to get the help pages to be indexed by search engines because they cannot get into the frames and if they do they cannot follow the javascript links. Further, webhelp output is isolated from our other UA content on the corporate website (e.g., knowledge base articles, forums, etc.). Our customers need to be able to search across all of these resources. The webhelp is a stand alone system with its own search. Additionally, we would like to have more cross linking into the help pages from other sources. The framed webhelp seems to make those deep dive links difficult. Finally, the look and feel of most webhelp (even with a fair amount of CSS/customization) is clunky at best. 1999 called, they want their help system back.

My thinking is that in order to get a help system that is easily indexable by search engines and integrates with our other content (managed by Drupal), I will have to generate unframed HTML pages that have the TOC built into the pages. Then I can either point a search appliance at it to unify Drupal content and help content in a single search or I can import the HTML into Drupal as part of my publish process. The HTML pages would be generated using the DITA open toolkit and custom XSLT stylesheets to do the transform.

Those pieces are outside of my technical skill level and would require a lot of time and money to put together. Before going down that route, I am trying to learn what other people do once they've gotten to an XML source using Structured FrameMaker. Does everyone just generate webhelp and be happy with it? If so, are they using DITA open toolkit or are they using other tools? How do they solve the search problems associated with webhep?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I don't want to dig down a hole of custom development to design the perfect help pages before I know that the solution is not already out there.

Thanks,

Erin

Conversion Table Questions: problems converting tables to structured

I'm in the process of converting unstructed FM8 docs to structured docs using FM10 and DITA structure. Right now I'm trying to build a conversion table to structure the docs, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the tables. The main problem seems to be with the tgroup element since I can't figure out how to get the thead and tbody to wrap in the tgroup element.

Here is an example of one of the tables I'm trying to structure:

Structured table.png

This is the Table section of the conversion table I've had the most success with:

Table Elements.png

And this is the result:

structured view.png

As you can see, the thead and tbody elements are not wrapped in tgroup and the structure is invalid. I've been playing around with the conversion table for several days now and can't seem to figure out how to fix this. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Suppressing Element Content

$

I have an element that contains reference information that should not be rendered.  I have read the structured dev guide and it appears that I handle this process by mapping the element to a marker using rules such as:

element "myhiddentag" {
is fm marker element;
marker text is content;
}

Also in the EDD I have an element definition that defines "myhiddentag" as a marker.

I don't understand what happens next...

The content does not look any different to me on the screen.  I still see the tagging and the data.

I also see an entry in the Marker dialog that looks correct.

So how does the content disappear from the display and/or output?

This is probably a basic misunderstanding of Markers..

Thanks - Jim

How can you set the background color of a table cell?

$

Unstructured FrameMaker supports applying a background color to a table cell, so why doesn't a FrameMaker EDD support the CSS property background-color? (Structured Application Developer Reference, p. 185).

It looks like Structured FrameMaker only supports text background color but not cell background color. Is this correct, or am I missing something? How can I color-code table cells for semantic purposes?

Editing DOCTYPE declaration

Hi all,

I have been trying to accomplish this task for some time now and have decided it's not possible. Thought I would ask before moving on, though...Is there a way to edit the DOCTYPE declaration that Frame10 outputs within a structured application? In other words, can I create a structured application that outputs an XHTML document with an HTML 5 declaration?

Instead of: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "dtd.dtd" []>

I want: <!DOCTYPE html>

Possible? Thanks.

Can FrameMaker 10 and/or 11 *output* raw SGML data?

$

Our group has a requirement from the government to output SGML data. Right now, the group from whom we're inheriting data are using UltraEdit to write the text, Arbortext to tag the documents as SGML, and outputting to Xysoft (XPP). The writers are separate from the "coders/taggers." We're hoping to use FM to reduce that process to a single doc for writing and output. There's another requirement to output to pdf, but Acrobat will handle that.

Right now, my concern is finding a way to simplify this process. Can FrameMaker output raw SGML data? If 10 and/or 11 cannot, is there a version that can?

Thanks for any help. I've done some research online, and from what I've read, it's a possibility, but then the tech support guy I spoke with said that neither 10 nor 11 is capable of outputting to SGML ... which is why I'm here.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, everyone.

Framemaker v11 Books unable to clear all change bars from documents

I have converted all Framemaker v10 documents to v11 by opening and saving. However when opening the Book v11 for these documents and applying the 'clear all change bars' option a book error log message advises that the documents cannot be opened as they are in a previous version! When performing the same function on the individual documents outside of the Book this works fine. But unable to clear all change bars within a book when selecting all the files in one go. Is there a bug with Books in v11?

Import graphic file by reference vs copy into document

Is there any way to determine which files have graphics imported by reference vs copy into document? I have MANY MANY files that I ALWAYS want to have the graphics copied to document becauseI tend to move my graphics. I accidentally used the copy by reference to some files. I know that if the graphic is moved and you open the file the graphics is grayed out. Is there any easier way to determine which files have the graphics linked instead of embedded?

How to create a frame or box to surround a element

Hi,

Would appreciate some help on this one, as I can't seem to figure it out.

How do you create a frame or box to surround an element, for example when using Hazardstatements.

The only way I can think of is to use tables, but is there any other way?

Example:

Danger
Some warning text
Some warning text

Thanks

Document title in footer (using DITA)

$

We want to put our document title in the footer. I did it by editing the FM template to include an empty DocTitle variable, and importing a DocTitle variable from another file into the book after map-to-book.

This works well. But is there a way to accomplish something similar that doesn't require post-processing after map-to-book?

Currently, the only mention of the document title is in the title attribute of the map element in the ditamap file. Any suggestions on how to automatically pull the document title from the map attribute into the structured FM template for footer use?

If it requires much coding, it may be easier to continue the manual import. But I wanted to check in case there's a simple solution. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Larry
