How do I create page breaks in the structure itself?

Hello,

 

I'm switching from word to structured FM and DITA. I know that I could use the lines element to create page breaks where I need them, and also insert manual page breaks at the top of the next available page.

 

But there must be a better way in the structure somehow, conditional on certain conditions - for example, new topics always on a new page or no separation of images from its immediately preceding reference. Please could somebody expain how I can create such page breaks in the structure.

How to convert existing FM to DITA 1.2? Any documentation?

I watched a webinar posted on the adobe website called "How to Optimize content for smooth migration into XML/DITA" and in the conversion, it showed an element called dita (root) and elements called topic before the main content. I took a class in DITA authoring last month and we learned about elements such as reference and then refbody and concept and conbody. The class I took did not go into how to use DITA in FrameMaker which is what I need to figure out now.

 

I'm using FM 10. I have a conversion table that is working pretty well, however, I understand that I need to import an EDD and a template into the files I convert.

 

My questions are:

What template and EDD file do I use? There are so many of them in the Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\Structure\xml\DITA_1.2\app folder. In the DITA folder there are folders for concept, and reference and task that look correct. However, in the DITA_1.2 folder I have no idea where to start.

 

Is there any documentation for DITA_1.2 for FrameMaker 10? Or books or Help or anything for someone new to using DITA in FrameMaker. I looked at the FM 10 Help for DITA, but it does not really cover when you are converting existing documents, just creating new topics.

Unresolved cross refs

I am trying to open FM10 files with FM10 but I get hundreds of unresloved cross refs, and it does not work properly.  Can I get a copy of FM10 or is there a solution?

Hi,

 

I am using FM12, and I can create display equations using "Special->MathML equation" menu. How to generate inline MathML equations? ie., I want to have equation along with text, something like

 

some text goes here and having inline equation (x+y+z=10)

How to withdraw a wrong open and save of a structured fm file in unstructured mode?

I opened a structured fm file wrongly in unstructured mode and saved it. When I opened this fm file again in structured mode, the structure view has been blank. Does anyone no how to withdraw this?

Save ditamap as FM book without chapters?

Newbee here.

 

Is there a way to save a ditamap from Vasont to a FM book with components and have it create a book with all the topics instead of Chapters? I would like to have one large book with chapter headings but with separate files for all the topics. Is this possible? What I get now is FM book with chapters where the files are combined into chapters.

 

I am using FM 12. I am extracting the ditamap and topic files from Vasont, and want to edit them as FM files and then load them back to Vasont. I do not have the plugin for FM to vasont.  Anyone have an idea of the cost of those extensions?

I was very sorry to see a recent post on the dita-users list saying that Jeremy has died. We've used Mif2Go extensively and found Jeremy incredibly helpful. The FM community won't be the same without him.

Internal Error 12024, 18652356, 18692061 and 18514761 during reopening a FM12 file

Hello everybody,

 

I can not open a FM12 file, the internal error code 12024, 18652356, 18692061 and 18514761 tells me nothing and I unless searching for a plain text translation for the error codes! This kind of trouble occures from time to time but now, first time on FM12. Therefore I try to check if my EDD rules producing this mistake, error or other undefined loop. I like to fix this error but I need to know where is the mistake, one week of work are be in danger in this case... !!!

 

Anybody a idea to fix this issue? (no *.Backup / *.Recovery file existing)

Any possibilities for "OPEN IN SAVE MODE"

Any possibilities for "CHECK FILE BEFORE TRY TO OPEN"

 

I can not believe that Adobe is unable to define plain text error codes, the technical support in unreachable!

In making an EDD for a book where one file might be a chapter (or appendix), is the

Element (Container): Chapter

Valid as the highest-level element?

 

or is only the whole book (FrameBook) valid as the highest-level element?

Trouble with Cross-References

FM11 / DITA 1.2

 

What could cause a particular cross reference to consistently NOT work? I know that's vague. I'll try to give a more specific example:

 

Let's say I have a collection of xrefs across several XML files in a DITA map. Some xrefs might even point to the same item (usually a <title> tag with an ID attribute). On output to a book with FM components, particular xrefs just will not work (they output as "unresolved"). I can fix it manually in the FM file, but I'd rather it work correctly in the first place, especially since I deal with translation in to several languages, and if I can't get an xref to just work, I have to fix it many, many times.

 

I've tried deleting the xref and starting again; I've tried changing the ID attribute in case there was some kind of conflict...I still have trouble with that particular xref (and this happens with more than one xref). What else can I try?

 

Again, I know this is vague. I'd be happy to elaborate on relevant points. I just don't currently have time to write a massive description and I want to get this question out.

What happened to Full FM?

Yesterday, I downloaded FM v12 Trial, upgraded to full version with license/serial number, and used it with some existing .fm files for initial testing.

Today, using same icon on Start Menu and/or Desktop, I only have XML Author.

What happened to full install?

Conditional text

Hello,

I want to work with conditional text. I have text for product A and text for product B in topics.
When I blank out the text for product B the topic shows only the text for product A.
When I reference the topic in a map and create a document from the map, the document shows the text for product A and B.
Where is my mistake? Can you please help me?

Create watermark in FrameMaker 7.1

I am trying to add a "PRELIMINARY" watermark to every page of a structured document in FrameMaker 7.1.  I added the text in a text box to the master pages, but the graphics boxes in my document block out the watermark.  I tried placing the text in a graphics box, but that gave the same results.  Is there a way to bring a watermark to the front of graphics boxes?

Errors trying to apply a Boolean expression for conditional text

I have been trying to create some Boolean expressions to filter conditional text, with mixed results. The Boolean expression is three conditions separated by ORs followed by four conditions preceded by AND NOTs. When I apply the expression, FrameMaker exhibits and error and has to quit. The numbers in the error message are:

 

9004, 4908044, 6134440, 5459515

 

The hidden log file appears to be nothing more than a stack dump.

 

Do the numbers listed above indicate anything?

 

Are there any known limitations on how long a Boolean expression can or should be? One expression with one fewer OR worked.

 

Does there need to be a space between an AND and a NOT? The builder does add one, so I assume it is not necessary.

 

Does anyone have some general rules of thumb when working with Boolean expressions for conditional text?

Hierarchical ditamaps

Hello

 

I'm evaluating the DITA functionality in Framemaker 9.0 and need some help with DITA bookmaps. In my company we organise maps within bookmaps to create a hierarchical structutre. I've been able to import and convert our current maps into hierarchical framemaker books, but have been unable to preserve related topic links between the lower level bookmaps. Is there something I need to do to preserve these links or are reltables not supported in hierarchical maps in Framemaker 9?

Error messages when defining/using "Filter by attribute"

I run FM8 on SOLARIS.

 

When i activate a new "Filter by attribute" i get the messages:

 

Show/Hide setting for FM8_SYSTEM_HIDEELEMENT is inconsistent

Show/Hide setting for FM8_TRACK_CHANGES_DELETED is inconsistent

 

The filtering in a separate bookfile works, but the problem appears when i run "Update book"

The book used to have "Conditional Text".

convert fm to XML

I need to convert 1650 FrameMaker files into XML, with WEbWorks Publisher standard edition 7. The program crashed during first analyse, after 1000 files. I don't think is a computer resource limit, because if I open task manager CPU and RAM is not over.

For convert this files I use only one book file.

 

Help me please!!!!!

how can we handle graphics in DITA source files in order to display them correctly both in PDF and H

We are using FM9 to publish PDF and HTML output from DITA source files and we cannot find a way to display images correctly. By adjusting the appropriate DPI, the image gets correctly displayed in HTML but not in PDF where it appears cropped according to the the text frames of the source file in FM9, like this:

We have tried to enlarge the text frame in the source file but for some reasons FrameMaker doesn't take these changes into account.

By modifying the attribute of the element <fig> (expanse = page), it was possible to improve a bit the rendering in the PDF but not completely.

Our graphics are in JPG format.

Any help on this is highly appreciated.
